Nothing, really. It's just a number. When I turned 18, I expected the whole world to change. It didn't.

Just expect the law to hit you harder than when you were 17 and younger.

Time to get addicted to cigarettes! And to risk being convicted of rape if you have consensual sex w/ a girl a year younger than you!!

I know it's tough in the states (where I assume you live), but you don't really get to truly celebrate when you're 21 and it suddenly becomes legal to do what you've been doing for 5+ years. For now just mourn your lost youth :(

You can buy lotto tickets now.

Don't forget to smoke while you scratch away your dreams!

(Also, you can vote, which is pretty sweet. If you haven't registered, do it now! RIGHT NOW.)

Unless you don't want to get roped in for jury duty, or other "services" that come with becoming a registered voter. That's the reason I've not registered to vote, and never will.

16, 18, 21... the big three. You got nothing left to look forward to after that except lower insurance rates (30), senior citizen discounts (60), and medicare/social security (62... probably 68 for you).

Don't forget to sign up for Selective Service. Technically there's jail time and fine of up to 250,000 if you don't, but I most people I graduated with didn't sign up and nobody has given a shit yet. There are, however, some student financial aid/grants, government employment opportunities, and government assistance programs may require you to have registered in order to get. Basically, if we ever find ourselves in a situation where we need to re-institute the draft... er.. "selective service", you could get in deep shit for not doing so.... but for now they're just relying on soft incentives.

I never did that, either. Even though I legally "have to", I've not gotten bitched at about it yet, so I figure it's fine.

Well, or my parents did it for me when I was younger. Fuck if I know.

I believe you'd have to be 18 to register for the service. It's mandatory if you need financial aid for college.

You can say that you're not a teenager anymore, I hate teenagers...

Even though most of em look older than me.

Iono... unless you're a chick those ages aren't really a big deal besides 21. Can you believe sweet 16 parties? People seriously put a lot of money into that shit! Then of course the pedo's back off and the closet pedo's jump in at 18. then for everyone 21 equals get drunk...Or NOT get drunk, but you still have to drink anyway! D<

OH YEAH, and you don't have to lie about your age and stupid shit on the internet anymore.

Funny, whenever I deal with kids that tell me their real age, I tend to praise them for their bravery, honesty, and maturity.

Then again, I'm sure they are thinking that whenever I tell them I'm a 22 year old.

Porn.

Wat? You still watching it on VHS as well too huh? Got the whole hat & trenchcoat thing going on when you go up to the counter so nobody recognizes you for the insatiable sick freak you are - clinging tenaciously to your copy of "Creamed Cornholes 3" like it was the One goddamn Ring to rule them all?

There's so much free porn on the internet, I honestly don't understand why brick & mortar distributors still exist. Are our dads and grandpas, unable to navigate this new-fangled series of tubes called the inter-web, still that much of a consumer base?

Hopefully I will have a job offer, and therefore no more car rentals before I hit 25.

You'd think the voter rolls would suffice for that...

Not entirely sure how it works in the States, but in Canada, as far as I know, they pull potential jurors from several different pools, like driver's license, voting registry, ect.

Porn? Oh c'mon....

My girlfriend and I have our own "super secret stash" that for some reason we know where we each other hide our "super secret stash" and go on to our "Super duper secret stash." Its not so bad, as long as it doesn't change your perception of both genders and turns you into a different person.

You'll have to register for selective services within a 30 day period or risk getting in trouble.

Totally happened to me. Not as bad as you'd expect though; Free coffee and drawing time are alright to me. Being under 25 your chances of getting chosen for the final jury are slim.

On to the point:

Smoke, lose money in the lotto, go to certain concerts which you make a big deal about(even more so at 21), and regret actually getting in trouble.

Mostly the last one is what I remember...

How to never be chosen for a jury ever: Read this (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jury_Nullification). (No, I do not endorse this except in the most extreme of cases)

SO you turned 18? well now, you have the choice to rebel from anything you've ever hated. smoke to show it, get tattoo's, and bicker about the law with your college buddies while knowing deep down the law now has a firm grip on your nether regions.

Here's what you need to do. chug down a huge bottle of Sunny D, because you're 18 AND YOU CAN!!! say "F***! I love life!!!! I'm 18!!!! WOOOWOoooowooooo!!!! grab your dads car keys, get in that 80,000 dollar sports car and drive off.

Turning 18 really has no significance. If you aren't smoking already then you're probably not going to start (same with 21 and drinking).

As for porn, i don't think it's a matter of being 18 as much as it's a matter of paying for it. Are you really going to give one of those sites your credit card?

Yeah, you can get the permit to carry a handgun when you're 18, but you can't actually buy one until you're 21. You'd still need a parent or guardian to purchase it, at which point they can give/will it to you and you can legally carry it. At least, that's the way it is in Indiana. It's a little fucked up because federal law trumps state law in this case, and the old firearm laws haven't been taken off the books or updated to compliment the Brady laws.
