The PSO 2 Character Creator has been released to the public!

At long last we get to really start developing our character concepts for the next chapter in the Phantasy Star series. For artists of the forum it means we finally have solid reference material to base our drawings on, buahahah!

The only catch is how extremely difficult it is to draw the new character designs. :' ]

So I am here to propose a method for us all to get started on that much needed practice, to promote some awesome and fun character concepts, and spread the love around the forum a bit more.




The PSO2 - Character Sketch Thread!

-- Here are the rules for participating --

Anyone can participate. To request a sketch or to do the sketching itself, or both!
PSO2 requests only, though, stay focused people.


--- If you want your character sketched by anyone ---

Simply post reference images of the ONE character you most desire to be drawn by the talents of PSOW. Please use either a spoiler-box tag or an offsite link to the image. To keep things tidy and make you really choose your concept wisely, I'm going to ask that you limit yourself to only one character request per month. So its april now, submit one, then in May submit your latest and greatest design or new and improved of the old - and see how it goes~

And that's it! Sit back, cross your fingers and pray... or pursue one of the next options!


--- If you want your character sketched by me ---

You will need to contribute to the thread by sketching someone elses character request! First give unto others, then thee shall receive in kind.

Draw someones character concept for them and submit it to this thread, then send me a PM with both your contribution and reference for your own request and I will add it to my list of concepts to draw. My new sketches and other updates will come roughly once a week, on weekends, and will be added in the same area as the rest of the contributing artists.


--- If you want to sketch someone elses character ---

Here is the real meat and potatoes of this thread.. sketching a character for someone else! Pick a concept from those requested in the comments below and draw a nifty sketch of that character! It doesn't have to be en epic 8 hr painting or some other strenuous ordeal, you don't have to be an expert either. Just pick something you like, maybe come up with a fun scenario of what the character could be doing other than just standing around-- then give it a nice hearty stab of effort, and that will be enough ~!

Before you start though, you must contact the owner of the character-- with the idea you have for the drawing-- and acquire their consent (ideally through private messages!)

This way you assure yourself that you wont land yourself in trouble by drawing something you really shouldn't.. plus the added bonus of talking to a real human about the ideas they've come up with and your own interpretation. There have been days where this is about all I do, heh.

Once finished - post the results here and I will update them to the top of the thread for everyone to get a good look at! : ]


--- If you want to sketch your own character ---

If you'd rather just draw your own character, or want to add your own character drawings in addition to your other submissions listed in the top of the thread, that's fine too! Just submit your images with a comment like "here is a sketch of my character, _________, add it to the list!"

While it's still cool to draw for others, I mostly just want to get the ball rolling here with everyone getting the hang of PSO2 related artwork, so these kinds of submissions are not frowned upon in the least. : ]

Mostly doing this because I need SOMETHING to motivate me to draw... So I don't deteriorate into a talent-less loser after months of procrastinating. NOT SAYING PEOPLE THAT CAN'T DRAW ARE LOSERS. Just saying that I'd be a loser for wasting my talent till it's gone. Active art communities really get the pencil/tablet moving, so if this thread dies, you all suck! D<

Nice idea man! :D I haven't been home this weekend, so I haven't been able to try the whole PSO2 thing.

Altough I am more focused on practicing at the moment, I think I can do some quick 2-4h paints during the weekend, which on the other hand might be good for my digital painting skills in general. So, anyone who doesn't mind me to do a quick paint of their character (I am nowhere near the level of Sagasu) can let me know. Else I'll pick randomly :D

@Sagasu: When I paint I prefer to give it a backdrop. Maybe a link to some screens of environments would be nice in the first post.

Aha! Nice work rock!

I used to take a lot, lot longer to draw / paint / eventually get around to completing my art as well - then I started forcing myself over out of my comfort zone with things like 40 second pose sketches and 1hr speedpaints. Once you start pushing yourself more like that, then come back to the big long drawings you invest a lot of time in, then you start to find that you're making a lot more intelligent and aesthetically pleasing decisions a lot more quickly than before. And at the end of an 8 hr session, all those decisions add up to something grand. ; ]

Will add your contribution to the OP and add your characters to my list, since you're the first to complete the mission of drawing art for someone else I'll see if I can make it a little special.

For everyone who feels like they need to rush to upload something now, or draw something right now this weekend, relax! I hope this thread stays around for a while, so just keep it in mind and feel free to come back to it when you're good and ready~

Ami talked me into posting, but I deleted that post earlier since it had two characters in it (I was wanting them in the same pic if anyone were to do it), and wasn't gonna worry about doing another post, but.... I really would be curious to see what someone could do with my caseal. While I love both Karyna and Myra equally, it'd be nice if my max height caseal got some love (always seem to give it to Karyna; no matter what game I make her in). I'm a sucker for that neon glow (As I like to abuse in all my drawings) And that outling glow from the lava behind he is really cool. then the patterns on her armored legging are pretty swag. AND you went through the effort to give it a background? D:

My only problem is that she looks kinda tall for a 15 year old asian girl. But I'll definitely get you back! And I kind of needed someone new to draw from this thread either way, just haven't checked back at it yet.

Fwuah, okay, thread update!

Its been a bit of a rough week, but the gallery is updated with everyone's drawings, and I've added 4 new sketches of my own for the weekend update. So far I've only worked with characters belonging to those who have contributed drawings to the thread, but I think in the future I will choose one a week from those making regular requests as well.

Ahah, and seeing as how some of you have been sketching more than one character for other people I will likely come back to those folk's characters again and go for another round.

True, but I'm really, really slow at learning that kind of thing. I'm also incredibly impatient (which makes me play against myself, being a slow learner and impatient). I once ripped an entire sketchbook to shreds because I couldn't draw something simple. Not being a very optimistic type of person, doesn't help either. Dooming myself before I even try.

As corny and stupid as it may sound, I would need a complete personality change (which won't happen) if I wanted to learn anything about art.

So, I do the only thing I can do, and just make images and characters in my little virtual Barbie dress-up games.

Most people aren't really that picky when it comes to the quality though. As long as you try. At least in my case, when I draw someone, I don't ever expect anyone else to draw me back. I draw to get better, and to have fun. That's how this thread should be :3

But seriously, we need moar artists. Even if all you can do is make a glorified stick doodle, that could be the thing to make someone's day. Artist to request ratio is really low D:

I have practiced off and on for years, invested in a tablet, talked to artist friends, used guides....it's just not clicking in my brain yet. Oh trust me, I do agree with you. I believe I could be taught to draw. But for now that drawing was my absolute best effort. I have no idea where to begin. My friend is supposed to teach me, but so far he hasn't had time.

I'm also the first to admit I'm lacking in patience. Between my job and other commitments, I've never truly had the time to devote to learning to draw that I'd like to have.

Painting means you are not rendering/CG-ing the picture using tons of layers and FX and linework, but simply use a brush to fill the screen with values and colors. What's great about painting is that you can change and add stuff by just painting over with the brush, which increases the freedom of what you can make. I use a mixture of painting and FX to make my pictures.

I think it looks great! You should try painting more. Also try painting backgrounds. It's lots of fun! :D

I always thought the point of digital painting was abusing special effects and layers and magical photoshop techniques to cheat and do things that make traditional painters jealous. D8

The problem of lines in general is that they make a picture flat. Why? Because most people keep their lines black which destroy every single illusion of depth.

Blegh, I've been working on improving my backgrounds on and off for like a few years now, (planning em out/sketching em isn't nearly as hard as coloring them)

This would explain why no matter how hard I try/days I spend, they just come out awkward looking. And yeah, if there's anything that's the least fun in my usual art process. It's the line work, or I should say, it's not fun AT ALL and it takes the longest and anticipating it kind of turns me off from working on big pictures. Or other people use the pen tool -I hate using the pen tool it just confuses me and frustrates me and I don't WANT to "get used to using it," just for my generic anime style that I should be trying to evolve from.

But I also kind of failed to realize that most anime's in general actually paint their more detailed backgrounds to begin with, or at least in general it's line-less. Next time I draw something really big I'll probably try to color the linework on the character and do whatever I call painting for the background. THEN I'LL BE A BRAND NEW MAN!

Those look pretty awesome! You'd better stick around here for a bit.

Painting means you are not rendering/CG-ing the picture using tons of layers and FX and linework, but simply use a brush to fill the screen with values and colors. What's great about painting is that you can change and add stuff by just painting over with the brush, which increases the freedom of what you can make. I use a mixture of painting and FX to make my pictures.

I think it looks great! You should try painting more. Also try painting backgrounds. It's lots of fun! :D
Also if your that unsure about your painting skill using this method, you CAN make darker instances around edges that you want defined as the line as well, It just wont be a solid line all the way around.

I took VANNOs unfinished image of Ryo's character. I felt like it could use some tweaks, but it was mostly because his style looked easy to abuse and modify and I had fun with it. But it also seemed kind of rude and it WAS for a contest and I'm doubt this is the direction he would want to go with the picture so I asked for permission first, and I still think I sound like a dick saying this but in the end it was mostly for fun and I like the way it came out and he has some really good facial anatomy and and and... erm

Added some special effect so it'd look more sci-fi ish with the red lights n stuff.

Characteristics: pale skin, pale-blonde hair, blue eyes. Tall and lanky, with slightly disproportionally long limbs. Long, floppy ears. Lean and muscular. Huge grin, much bigger than the one he's got in the picture. Feel free to make it absolutely face-splitting, from ear to ear.

Edit: To clarify, he doesn't have the appearance of a monster with slouching shoulders and orangutan-like arms dragging along the floor. He's got some real poise going on.

Clothing: like the picture, but with blue as a primary colour and yellow as secondary. About a 70/30 ratio. The goggles should be the colour that the parts of the hat closest to the face is not. His hat should be outrageous. Picture adding a FOnewearl's hat into the standard FOnewm hat, which is what I'll be doing. I'd love to add the FOmar hat into the mix as well, but the goggles need to stay.

A quick sketch or an elaborate work, either would be fine with me. Thanks. :)

I'm noticing a severe lack of classic FOmarl designs, though, so... hopefully someone will wanna give drawing Alena a go! ^o^ A few friends have gifted art of her, before, so I'd love to get something for Alena's PSO2 iteration.

Alena's elegant and is a healer / full-support priestess-y empress FOmarl ladyface. :3

Dunno if that can be incorporated, or not, but eh... It'd be nice. She wields a Roza Crane, the angel-wing talis/card weapon. I realize that'd be a lot of detail, so it's not necessary. x_x Resta/Anti sparkles, Grants/Gigrants sparkles, etc. would all be quite fitting.

... oh, and no units, prease. I don't really like how any of them look on her... thus far.

In about 7 hours and 20 minutes it is over, the the Release of the game will be up in 27 hours after that with the new Tundra area and level 40 cap and AC shop in effect ^^
