Well I was wandering through the floating stickies thinking maybe I'll clean up my "layers" guide from some 6 odd years ago, and was inspired to post a set of tutorials that I made earlier this year.

They were done as a set of walk throughs of my coloring process.
I don't know how many pictures we're allowed to have in a post so I'm going to do one tutorial a post.
There are 7 of them so please hold any comments until they are all posted so they are all one after another.
(EDIT: All are posted)

Picture done using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Adobe After Effect CS3 with Optical Flares add-on.

Sorry didn't mean to kill anyone's computer.
I guess that wasn't too dial-up friendly... or DSL friendly for that matter.
Didn't realize that I posted 9.6MB of pictures.

Just thinking about how long this would take, makes my mind go crazy! So many steps and so much precession must take ages!

I've toned down my regular steps in drawing/painting to something like 5. the rest I do is completely random with every picture, though these days I put most time into actual painting (just regular brushes in a single layer).

I do find it fun to make up clever new ways to do stuff in photoshop. I once did the shading in a picture by making a Brightness/contrast layer, where I turned down the brightness, then I put a mask on it and only used black/white brushes to shade the whole thing (by painting inside the mask), starting from a 50% gray. That way you can work both lighting and shading in one layer.

@Q

Meh. it doesn't take that long. Making the tutorials turned a 30min coloring job into like 3 days. (30min does not include line-art or the motorcycle) I never realized how much I put into just the eyes until I made the tutorial.
I did spend a lot of extra time on the line work and the motorcycle. Excluding the motorcycle the background took me less than 5 minutes to color. Over all this picture probably would have taken about 3-5 hours of time. And it's usually in 10 to 30 minute intervals before I go to bed. So about a week from start to finish on this one, adding the tutorials it took 2 weeks.

But I do agree with the backgrounds If I put the same degree of detail that I put into the character into the backgrounds, which I have done, that will take forever. Longest so far is one that took me 4 months to complete.

Another thing to note is these tutorials were done in February 2012 and I've changed a lot of how I do some coloring. The skin, eyes, lips and hair have not changed much though. However out of necessity I've overhauled how I do backgrounds.

The starting from 50% gray brightness/contrast thing you mentioned intrigues me. Do you have any tutorials of that technique?

Ah! thats good to hear! I was affraid this would take hours upon hours, but yeah, for backgrounds it probably would. Maybe you should try to look into matte painting for backgrounds. It would fit the realism of your foreground.

I just started with drawing classes a few weeks ago and some people there seemed interested in how to work digitally. I am planning to do some Photoshop/Wacom tutorials this weekend to explain some stuff and how to pull of certain tricks. I will see if I can explain my brightness/contrast shading.
