I'm going to reformat my entire computer. What should I save

I've done this before, but I relized I had a lot of crap I forgot to save. I'm just wondering. SnAP and ABDUR101 have experience in this, but what do you think?

When I format and do a full reinstall I ask myself this question when analyzing what I have:

"Am I gonna want this later?"

If the answer is yes, then back it up. I back up all my critical files once a month. n_nv

exactly. just keep files you want, regardless if it's pictures or music. stuff that people think are useless to them but maybe very important to you. just things like that.

Actually its for the music I've downloaded. I don't wanna ever get back in one of those p2p programs. I felt so dirty when I stole the music from the artists. Also, 2 gigs isnt nice. I have so much shlt on this comp.

I'd make sure to take a look through your favourites and save the ones that you want. I always hear people complaining about how they forgot to save their favourites.

i've done this before, and i've lost things that i couldn't replace because i picked the wrong things (typical of me)

what i should have backed up was:

irreplacable and rare files
old logs
my INI files for things i could redownload
save files for some games
some music files i can't replace
some of my art (as bad as it was)
some of my poetry (thats now lost)
some drivers that i would possibly need for reinstalling things

and so on... i got like... 90 megs of stuff in the end, that i could have redownloaded with ease...
its a case of need vs want at the basic level..

the one thing i've never wanted to keep is bookmarks, oddly.
only have them on this comp now because of other people.

Well, I'm gonna first install 98, mess around with it, then install XP. See you later, and wish me luck! Thanks for your help... I only had one diskette. Oh well, I loose what I loose.

Essential system files(programs, themes, backgrounds, etc)
Music
PSP files


and uhh..what files of mine did you want me to link to? I never upload my files to a server, I just burn them to a CD and put a date on it with a label as to what it is.

The only things I keep for after a reformat are internet explorer bookmarks.

Well, I'm back! It took a long time to do, but my HD is a lot bigger (a whole 1 gig!) and a lot faster.

Getintothegame, sorry. I forgot that Kazaa is illegal. It's easy to do, though, because everyone uses it (go look at the "Show your desktop" thread or ask anyone you know), plus many on the people in the thread made mention of music or porn on their/others' computers, most of which is likely illegal.
