You'll learn as you go, learn when to block and when to guard, it's all up to prefrence but I'll give you the setup for maximizing one weapon type to it's fullest.

If you plan to tank with high defense, the right side of the tree is what you want with just guard and just reversal as well sword will be your primary weapon.

If you plan to go offensive with high attack, the left side of the tree is what you want, use a Partizan as your primary weapon, though you don't need Partizan gear as all it does is extend the range/duration of your PAs which can be neglible.

Don't try to block every attack.
Learn how to time your step dodge, and get step attack in your skill tree.

Yeah, if you actually do this, you will want to use Sword as your primary weapon with the gear. Sonic Arrow makes HU the fastest mob killer in the game (providing they're within range, anyway, which is what makes them not-so-good at MPA).

Backing this up 100%, although I'd get all the gears if you only have the one tree to use.

A properly wielded sword will stomp any other melee weapon into the ground with its sheer stopping power and versatility.
