After forever of searching for any of the Genesis PS games, I ran across the GBA Phantasy Star Collection. Having never played the classics before (This collection lacks Phantasy Star 4), is there any advice or just things I should know before coming into the realm of classic Phantasy Star?

Draw maps. Grind efficiently. Purchase wisely.

With the first game, it's insanely easy to get lost during dungeons, as everything looks exactly the same. I can't stand playing the game without a map in front of me, and basically everyone I know suggest making a map as you go (I suggest a zoomed in Microsoft Paint, drawing one pixel for every step). You will get lost, and you will cry, if you don't.
Equipment is very powerful. A weapon upgrade is worth more than several levels, in a game where levels are sparse. I always use guns on Odin, since they attack all enemies. But I don't know if that's really worth it until the best gun, which will outdamage any other kind of attack except for WIND spam on a single target. Also, WIND is stronger than THUNDER, and more magic efficient.
When you get access to every planet, do Motavia first (You'll need to go back to Palma for some upgrades, but you can't access them until you do things in Mota), then Palma, then Dezolis. But, buy everything in the first Dezolis town first (at least Odin's gun).
Don't buy the landrover. Anything it can do, the hydrofoil can do, for free.
Remember that items don't appear until villagers say they appear. So talk to everyone you see, and if it seems like they just unlocked a new item, go check it out.
Don't be afraid to run. Some enemies aren't worth killing for the payout they give. I ran from pretty much everyone in the last few dungeons. And I regret nothing.

In PSII, you are always underleveled, and undergeared. You are expected to grind for your levels, and you are expected to die. Save often.
For the first half of the game, you'll have space for two party members you can add to your basic party. At this point, add Rudo and Amy. Once you can switch out the second party member, add Anna. Not only do all those members level well, and balance well with each other, but your other choices just aren't ever good. You have two specialists, who are only useful against certain enemies. But even against the correct enemy type, they aren't worth using.
Shir the thief can steal. This is why she can't fight. Enter and exit the weapons shop until you have two fire staffs (best weapons/armor for Amy), and the item shop until you get a Visophone (saves anywhere). This will take a while. This is worth it. These items will serve you until the end of the game.
The green Dam will crush you. You will die. You will cry. You will wish you were never alive. You will never feel complete until you finish it, and you will run like a little girl.

I think that's everything? Let me know if you have any questions.

Oh, right. PSIV is the best one, bar none. It's best at story telling, gameplay, and graphics. While the first games are rewarding for their difficult gameplay, this is just pleasant to sit through. If the first games take too much out of you, just grab the fourth. It will tell you enough about the earlier games so that you won't get lost, and it encourages you to play the earlier games to see what you've missed.

Take note, if you don't mind playing it on a console, the game "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" has all 4 Phantasy Stars on it. (Phantasy Star 1 is the unlockable, while the other 3 are available by default)So if you are looking for 4, that's one place to play it.
