Just curious as to what music people listen to when they are down...

Or music you listen to to cheer you up. Both would be cool. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I like to listen to Coltrane when I am sad. That always makes me feel better for some reason. Just lay back and listen to all of A Love Supreme. I always feel better after that.

If I'm down and want to wallow in my down-ness, I listen to "Christmas Day" by Jim White or "See You Space Cowboy" from the Cowboy Bebop OST. [edit: forgot the quintessential dark song: Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata]

To feel better, I listen to the Marriage of Figaro overture by Mozart. That's usually all I need.

When I am depressed, I generally listen to music that makes me even more depressed.

I still can't listen to Radiohead - Amnesiac all the way through.

Hooray!

Also, Coldplay - Parachutes has a similar effect.
Especially Trouble.
Well ... just Trouble, really.

AFI when you're down huh? Hahaha, good music but I don't know if it's the cure for depression (especially AFI material pre '97).
The Hot Water Music/Alkaline Trio split is nice when you're down...yeah it's pretty emo...just don't listen to the ALK3 side and you'll be alright.

When I'm feeling down, I usually listen to some 311. I can't stand heavy metal, and rap just pisses me off.

Only the first movement. The second movement's too light and cheerful, and the third one could give someone a damned panic attack.

Alkaline Trio, Roxette, Alphaville, Nena, Proclaimers, Rammstein, RHCP, Maaya Sakamoto, Tokio, and alot of anime music.

Quite afew others that are more recent though.

Sometimes I listen to down music when I'm down just to sit and enjoy getting lost in the music, since it's usually the best way to block out the TV blasting from downstairs.

And then there are times when I'll just listen to upbeat music to throw myself out of a crap mood. Just depends.

When I'm down I listen to heavy stuff like Rammstein, System of a Down or Rancid.

If I want to chear myself up, I listen to Country, Rock, or good rap (from before rap became commercial and mass-produced) like N.W.A. or KRS-1.

I've been shopping around for new music to listen to when I'm depressed lately. And you folks are going to be the unfortunate recipients of my need to relate my excitement over what I've found. I've rediscovered Tool.

That being said, I'll also preface this with the fact that, having only just recently re-discovered them, I only have one of their CD's thus far (Aenima). And this is the only CD I'm listening to lately. =P

I like so much about them and I'll try to relate my reasons as best I can. Remember though, that all that follows is my personal opinion and some of you, and probably the members of Tool themselves, will not agree with me on some or all aspects of my interpretations.

The mood of their music is most often quite depressing or angry; often switching from different shades of either emotions in the same song multiple times. They sound pissed off all the time, but it's that complacent, I know I'm here, I know where the problem is, I know everything that makes me sad, but I can't do a damn thing about it but tell you all about it and hope you understand me feeling of pissed offness.

The lyrics are great. Most of their songs have an overarching feeling of dissatisfaction with the systems in which we live. I'm talking relationships, religion, culture, and most likely people and their acceptance of the way things are. A lot of the basic systems. I'd put some of the lyrics up here but I'm not so sure if I'm allowed to do that?

And there's their pure talent as musicians. I don't think anyone should be able to deny that these guys have talent, even if you don't particularly like their kind of music. There are such subtleties in almost all of their songs, it's amazing sometimes to hear a song again and notice some of the notes that you never paid attention to the previous times. The first two minutes of Eulogy and the slow movement of Pushit come readily to mind as examples.

For any of you who care to sample their music I would say that off of the Aenima album, I would recommend "Eulogy" and "Pushit". And although I don't own the CD it's on yet, I still remember "Schism" quite well from the radio. Tis' a good one as well.

Oh, oh and if you want something strangely funny, "Die Eier Von Satan" is absolutely hilarious once you realize that the lyrics are a recipe for cookies. XD

I'll stop here as this is getting way too long... Thus ends my euphoric outburst. =p

I really don't know why they do, since I can't understand what they are saying, but alot of SPEED or Eriko tend to cheer me up when I'm down, Morning Musume too. I also like a lot of classical when I'm blue. Pantera tends to chear me up too.

There's NOTHING like a good happy hardcore mix to make me smile. I recommend any of the Happy2bHardcore mixes by Anabolic Frolic.

Otherwise, hmm. When I'm angry, a good drum'n'bass mix at high volumes works nicely. Fierce breakbeats and chest rumbling bass aren't exactly what you'd expect as a soul soothing kind of music, but for me, it works just fine.

When I'm simply depressed, I prefer anything more upbeat and cheerful, most of the time. Like I said above, happy hardcore is THE thing. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_hamster.gif

Silence is golden when I sad or depressed. If I don't want to be doing nothing then I'll play a game and whatever music is playing in the game is the music I listen too. But when I'm really ticked off I find that blasting The Duel of the Fates can calm me down.

Cold - 13 Ways to bleed on Stage
Evanescence - Any CD
Dashboard Confessional - Any song
Orgy - Both CDs

Those are for when I get depressed (which isn't too often)

Now, for the ones that I just want to get out of depression or sadness:

Spineshank - My favorite band, both CDs
Blindside - All 3 of the CDs
Systematic - My homies from Alabama
Haste - Inspirational, just inspiration
V-Mob - They are scary...a little too scary for me
Incubus - I don't know why they are considered into my pissed off music category
