Nelson Mandela, whose successful struggle against South Africa's apartheid system of racial segregation and discrimination made him a global symbol for the cause of human rights and earned him the Nobel Prize, died Thursday. He was 95.

Mandela spent 27 years in South African prisons before his release in 1990. He negotiated with the nation's white leaders toward establishing democracy and was elected South Africa's first black president in 1994, serving one term.

"He probably will be remembered both inside and outside South Africa as a political saint," said Michael Parks, the former editor of the Los Angeles Times who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1987 for his coverage of Mandela and South Africa's struggles.

"He had flaws that he had to overcome. He had a temper he had to deal with. He had to deal with what was going to be life imprisonment. Not all his decisions were great decisions, but what political leader's are," Parks said.

As a young man, Mandela worked as a lawyer and political activist to dismantle white minority rule under which blacks were denied political rights and basic freedoms. He began by emulating the non-violent methods of India's Mahatma Gandhi. But a turn to violence as the leader of the armed wing of the African National Congress that included a bombing campaign against government targets led to his imprisonment for over a quarter-century.

A worldwide campaign against apartheid pressured the regime into releasing Mandela in 1990 at age 71. He vowed to seek peace and reconciliation with South Africa's whites —but only if blacks received full rights as citizens.

He is a MAJOR and one of the most influential figures in civil rights. One that equals the legacy of MLK, here in the US. He fought for right of the people in South Africa and won. He is with God now! Rest in peace!

It shouldn't be a huge shocker for anyone. He was 95 and had a fair amount of health issues.

At least Mr. Mandela proved the good don't always die young. You don't get much "gooder" than him.

What a terrible year, but in all honesty, if anyone's earned themselves a well-deserved rest, it's Nelson Mandela.

Ya. The fact that he lived this long while fighting those issues is just amazing. The guy fought for himself and his people til he couldnt fight anymore.

R.I.P. Mandela.

Grew up learning bout him since I was little. He had a long and one hell-of-an-inspirational life. After all that struggle and everything that he done for others, he truly deserves to finally rest.

A truely inspirational person, fought for what he believed in until the very end.

Rest in peace Nelson Mandela, may your legacy never be forgotten.

Er, he was a bit more like Malcom X or the Black Panthers, except way more violent. At least before he went to prison. He co-founded the Umkhonto we Sizwe terrorist group which bombed government and public venues, resulting in over 100 civilian deaths. Mostly black. It was his initiative which turned the ANC from a non-violent protest organization under (at the time) Albert Lutuli into a militarized oppositional force which landminded public roads and routinely sanctioned the torture and executions of political prisoners and dissident guerrillas. "Necklacing" (putting a tire around someone's arms and torso and setting them on fire) was invented by them. He was also good friends and allies with Yasser Arafat, Fidel Castro, and Muammar Gaddafi - who provided arms and financial aid to the ANC. Names and affiliations that probably won't sit very well with most Americans.

Whether or not he personally condoned, or ordered, any of such brutality... he is the one that lead them down that path. Not to second guess history, but one has to wonder how things would have turned out had the ANC continued with a more non-violent resistance that actually emulated MLK or Gandhi. Did Mandela inadvertently, by violent uprising and association with communist leaders, essentially make negotiations to end Apartheid impossible until the end of the Cold War?

At any rate, he does deserve recognition and praise for how he handled his presidency, and his work towards re-unifying post-apartheid South Africa. He is rightly considered a hero and inspiration for that. I remember a lot of people were worried at the time that he would end up using his power to seek revenge or to visit the same tyranny on whites as they had on blacks.

And I don't really want to take away from his accomplishments, but Jesus Christ guys... comparing him to MLK? Really?

R.I.P Mandela. I really liked Morgan Freeman's portrayal of you in that one movie.

Towards the end of Malcom X's life he was heading towards the peaceful way as well until he was killed. But yes he did have some violent conections but I think he deserves praise for changing to the peaceful way.
