Hello guys!

It's Shinu. Well, you won't find much PS related arts here, sorry :( but I just wanted to show some of my stuff here, so maybe someone can find them useful, I don't know :/

First I'll start with the PS related stuff, but again those are still on going projects.

Here I had the idea of painting all my characters in the PS games,
So, from left: Yuri M. ( support partner in PSO3), Shinu Karasu (PSO2), Yuri (PSP2), Kula (PSO):

Sketch:

Base colors version with a background from another drawing:

Last progression:
[SPOILER-BOX]http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/15/45/51/27/pso_pr11.jpg[/SPOILER-BOX]

Ah and certainly most of art guys here know about it, I'm making a PSO2 related collaborative drawing, you'll find the thread in this fan work section.

Lobby background:
[SPOILER-BOX]http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/15/45/51/27/pso_co20.jpg[/SPOILER-BOX]

**********************************************

There's some other PS related stuff but still premature, just some sketches, I'll upload them when they are ready, yeah my sketches are kinda lazy :)

****************************

Guess that's all for today, I'll upload some other (PS non related :( ) drawings/paintings later, but before I go I'll leave this:

Old ruins and old creature

You used quite a fancy painting technique on that last one. I would love to see more of that! :D

And Sayara and me always post our non PS related stuff here anyway. Else it would become quite a death place here.

Shinureal
Jan 22, 2014, 04:51 AM
Thanks, I was influenced by studio Ghibly style when I drew that one :)

Ok here comes some other stuff, (if it helps keep this art section alive :D) :

AHHH just forgot, this one is PSO2 related :D I made it for Zorafim as an art trade:
[SPOILER-BOX]

Levia relaxing at the coast area

Oki last posting before leaving, there's still a lot of ( no Ps related :( ) paintings :)

Alright guys, here's some drawings before I go to sleep. I have an exam tomorrow and I haven't checked a book yet :/ bad bad student!

[SPOILER-BOX]
Tenshi no tamago

One funny fact about this painting:
when I've finished it and uploaded it to different sites,
I checked for it in Google, then I discovered a great anime
movie with the same name :D, awesome!!!

God you are so good with landscape. I am sooooo jealous. Landscape are my utter weakness (or more like when I get to it I just get super lazy). There is one thing I wanted to point out however. In your Levi image. I thought her fin was her right arm LMAO and that she had no hand....

Shinureal
Jan 23, 2014, 11:21 AM
Thanks,
But don't worry, Landscapes aren't that hart, at least when you get the trick to do them, I wasn't like this just a year ago. Here's what I do: I never start painting the whole landscape, first I train myself till I get satisfied with elements like grass, clouds, buildings etc. like this:

Grass training:
[SPOILER-BOX]http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/15/45/51/27/green_10.jpg[/SPOILER-BOX]

Clouds training:
[SPOILER-BOX]http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/15/45/51/27/clouds10.png[/SPOILER-BOX]

Buildings training:
[SPOILER-BOX]http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/15/45/51/27/old_bu10.jpg[/SPOILER-BOX]

Just after enough practice with every element I start painting the whole thing. And it's normal to get lazy, I've never finished a landscape in one shot, it takes time :)

There is one thing I wanted to point out however. In your Levi image. I thought her fin was her right arm LMAO and that she had no hand....

And yeah I noticed that too :) it looks like she doesn't have a right arm, just a fin. But at second sight you notice that her arm is hiding behind her.

Hello guys!

It's me again. Just uploading some painting in this late night, well, didn't have better to do :)

The further this thread goes and the uploaded stuff becomes older, yeah I started with the recent arts :)

Hello guys!

Guess I'll put something weird here, since this thread looks a bit too normal.
It's about a dream I had :) and that I wanted to draw, before I totally forget about it.

[SPOILER-BOX]http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/15/45/51/27/33333310.jpg[/SPOILER-BOX]

I don't know about you guys, but I'm always having weird dreams, so weird that I have to draw, or to write them somewhere.

Just to keep this thread alive, latest art I'm working in:

Lookin nice there! quite a lot of layer your use. I always try to keep at least the painting in a single layer for a more coherent picture. I use layers mostly for FX.

Shinureal
Feb 2, 2014, 07:34 PM
Thanks,
Really? I usually use more than those; the more the coloring is complicated, the more layers I use. I don't know, I feel more comfortable when I put everything in its layer :)
But I like to see how you paint, do you have a tuto or a speed paint on YT?

qoxolg
Feb 3, 2014, 12:40 AM
Here is one:

Shinureal
Feb 3, 2014, 06:02 AM
Wow! all this in one layer!! pretty strong.

qoxolg
Feb 3, 2014, 06:46 AM
Well, not 'all'. I only separate the character from the background, because that works a bit faster. The whole painting of the background and foreground is done in a single layer. Once I start with the FX I start adding lots of layers, but that's only for the last 1 hour of making the artwork. The most part I want to paint with as few layers as possible. They only distract and slow down.

Shinureal
Feb 3, 2014, 10:16 AM
Well, just the background in one layer is out of my league :) I'm used to multiple layers now.
And btw, I like your color degradation technic, it's the opposite of mine, I'm gotta try it and see if I can use it in the futur :D

Shinureal

Work in progression: Matoi for the Feb 2014 Jam on PSA.

[SPOILER-BOX]http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/15/45/51/27/workig10.jpg[/SPOILER-BOX]

But unfortunatly, I don't think I'll finish it in time, because RIGHT NOW my desktop just died on me and I'm used to work on it on the huge TV, just can't draw on the small screen of the laptop :/

You just have to get it done before voting starts. That's not necessarily at the end of the month.

Well, begin with trying to focus more on the big picture, instead of the details. Remember that in the end, most people will look at your picture from 'far away'. Paintings work in a same way, in that they are mostly viewed form a distance. Thats why you can get away with rough brushstrokes. I always try to keep that in my paintings to give them a refined like from a distance, yet there is this nice and rough edge.

To me whats most important in a picture is mood, balance of color and a balance of composition. A nice flow in every shape and color. Soft shapes and low contrast for a more relaxed mood and high contrast and sharp shapes for a more aggressive mood. The actual subject and details are more a secondary thing.

I always grab the full intention of the artwork in the very first dirty sketch I make. The rest is just filling in the gaps.

You'll get there as well if you can let go of some of the layers, one at a time :)

Well, I hope that damn thing got fixed soon. Did I mention that I mostly play PSO2 on it too? :(

A shame cuz im curious as to what you would have done with Matoi and my styles :V

TBH, me too :D, my strategy was like: first let's start with a simple drawing, once finished, let's figure out how to "sayara-ize" it.

You'll get there as well if you can let go of some of the layers, one at a time :)

Well, trying with a different approach isn't bad at all, it adds to the experience :) Next Jam gotta be Q style lol.

Alright a quick upload just to give you guys an idea of what I cn do traditionally:

Nice!

MY traditional stuff always looks crappy. I am used to a much to chaotic way of working digitally, which will result in a mess when working traditionally. Most of them are in my scraps on DA, but these days I don;t even bother to upload them.

Here are my best ones I think:
http://q-arts.deviantart.com/art/Rockbear-SMASH-303271337
http://q-arts.deviantart.com/art/Space-dealer-345703613

Also has to do with the fact that I love color and pencils and color don't go hand in hand with me.

Shinureal
Feb 5, 2014, 09:01 AM
Nice traditional work man!
Me too I switched to digital due to my lack of experience with colors, I even bought pincils and color bottles and never opponed them, now they are catching dust since 2 years :)

I think you would have been better off doing Sayara's style from the ground up. The best way to describe his style would be substance in the absence of form. I don't think you can just modify what you have to get that. You need to start with something, and just go with it without bothering to give it shape.
At least, that was the mindset I had with my piece.

Oh, and I totally did not see that manga until right now. I want more.

Sayara
Feb 11, 2014, 04:23 PM
In their defense, the set of 3 or so arts i did was me modifying their original works as well. so
We'll see.

Shinureal
Feb 11, 2014, 05:35 PM
Hmmm @Zora that's exactly what I was about to do from the start, I just did art lines and basecolors, then I suddently wanted to continue it my style and then reverse it into the Sayara one, since, like he said, did the same to some of our drawings. :) And I like the idea of comparing both of them. Now gotta do some reseaeches (which literary means stalking Sayara on DA)...Mwahahahah “ψ(`∇´)ψ

Shinureal
Feb 11, 2014, 07:31 PM
Alright I gave it my best, hope I'm a little closer to the Sayara style :D

[SPOILER-BOX]http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/15/45/51/27/rosali10.jpg[/SPOILER-BOX]

This is a true story, I like to draw real life events like this, like a scene from an old video game. The story here is about those two bad guys trying to steal something from my car because I left the door window half open, the problem is they didn't realize that I and my friend were sitting nearby. I was making my phone camera ready for a funny video but the guys weren't brave enough and gave up their plan...what a waste :(

I wish I could, but I'm still enslaved to those bad art lines when it comes to drawing characters :( but I'll try it someday :D

Very nice stuff. You know, on the subject of the backgrounds and the line art, I really like your line work. It's smooth, clear, and your characters are expressive, never easy things to do. I know a lot of people are more into coloring and the digital side of things, but I always really appreciate a nice, classic sense of form.

Of course, I'm partially color blind, so I'm probably biased!

Shinureal
Feb 27, 2014, 03:03 PM
Thank you! I'm glad you like my works.
I'm using the digital only for colors, because I suck at painting tradition, I even haven't tried it yet :D, but for other drawings like sketching and mangas, I'm more comfortable with the traditional way.

Bragatyr
Feb 28, 2014, 11:36 AM
That's awesome, I'm always glad to see traditional line work. Digital coloring is very beautiful, but for the figures themselves I usually think it looks more natural to have hand-drawn art. That's actually a pretty good mix, I think. I'm actually the same way with painting, I've only ever tried it once or twice, but if you ever get into it you should definitely post it here, I would love to see it. I recently tried out oil pastels and really liked them.

Shinureal
Feb 28, 2014, 12:05 PM
Last year I bought some pencils, brushes, A3 painting papers and lot of water color bottles, I put them in an empty unused room so I can start working on traditional painting...Since that day they are still catching dust there :) but if I someday start using them, I'll make sure to post the works, even if they suck, which is obvious :D

PS: your comments remembered me of what Hiroya Oku (author of the manga Gantz) said; he makes all his cities, cars, buildings, machines... digitally, but he always draws the characters traditionally to give them a warm and living look.

I want to give it that mystic atmospher of a clear night lightned by some huge moon...But I see that I'm missing the point.

Any suggestions guys? I'm kinda lost here...

Here the unfinished thing:

not that im an expert or anything but maybe something darkish blue like you have on the tree for the background and ruin stones?

well if you google moonlight you can see only the center under the moons placement is well lit.

Shinureal

Yep sure, but here we have a close up scene in which the moon isn't showed and work just as a great soft light source. Or at least that's what I have in mind :(

I've generally noticed that the songs I'm least satisfied with when I'm done are the ones that come out the best. I think it looks pretty great. I do understand you when you say something's missing (red, maybe?), but it's still really impressive to look at.

Shinureal
Apr 10, 2014, 03:34 PM
Thanks dude! we'll never become satisfied of our arts, otherwise we won't be able to evolve.
Hmm red? I don't know. But like I told sacrificial before, I was aiming for a mystic nightly atmospher softly lightned by a huge moon.

You sold yourself short on the water reflections. Its too sharp a contrast between the ethereal of the girl and scenery vs the quick work of the water.

Shinureal
Apr 11, 2014, 11:53 AM
Hmmm guess that water needs more work, I'll try refining it to match the rest of the painting. Thanks for the feedback!

Just some sucked textures practice after a tutorial I saw on YT:

[SPOILER-BOX]http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/15/45/51/27/new_ca11.jpg[/SPOILER-BOX]

Edit:

Alright! I'm not a big fan of textures. First reason, because I'm not a concept or a 3D artist, secondly is that I made a policy to not use textures till I'm able to paint the same effects, textures, surfaces and stuff by hand, and I'm not that far yet.

So me using textures this time war just to give it a try after watching a Youtube tutorial, and I wanted to check too if it was really that easy, but it wasn't; even if textures can help you make 90% of your painting, it still requires a certain level of experience.

And yeah I sucked here :); textures win't make the painting for you!

qoxolg
Apr 15, 2014, 10:52 AM
For textures to truly work you need a painting skill of a matte painter to make them completely blend in your artwork. Textures are shortcut many concept artists use, because in their case only the idea counts, not the artwork itself.

I suggest you learn to paint details yourself first. Best way to approach detail in a painting is learning to paint the big picture first. Details are most of the time unnecessary or distracting and are usually achieved by tricks and illusions.

Shinureal
Apr 15, 2014, 11:23 AM
Sure, since I'm not into concept arts I'll just stop using textures. I'm more of a traditional painter and it's the final piece of art that counts for me, not the idea or the amount of time.
So I'll go back to my beloved, time onsuming paintings :)

Yeah you're fully right; the most hard and stressful step is the big picture and the approach.

As I mentioned in my thread I thought your pixie picture turn out very well. As with all your work you tell a story in your pictures, and I find this one to be quite humorous. Plus I find the lighting to be a very nice touch. If I were to have any criticism I'd say you need to work on your feet a bit more, but on the other than that very well done.

Thanks, glad you like them.
You shouldn't paint a background in a one go if you get quickly bored, it was the same for me at first, it's not about concentration, but tricks. Now it takes me 2 go(s) to finish a backgroud.

Is that the title screen for one of your games? It certainly looks like something out of Final Fantasy. Or rather, Phantasy Star. I think PSIV started off with a shot like this.

I've always loved works like this. The way it shows off a landscape, and shows a person's travel though it. It makes the viewer feel like part of the journey as well.

Shinureal
May 18, 2015, 02:14 PM
I'm glad you like it.

No it's not a game, but rather a story, I usually make paintings from the stories I write or the mangas I'm drawing. Or, when the painting isn't related to one of them, I just add a character and a title for the sake of the story telling.

Working on another thingy:

The game development is on stand by for now, I did some art trades and got some songs, but the dude was only good with orchestral music, those kind of songs that you can only use for endings and credit screens :D. So, yeah, I still need a song for the actual gameplay, a rythmed modern song with some beat :)

Try to render it more paintsy. Use suggestion, instead of rendering details no ones is gonna look at. Putting to much detail in something that is not the main subject (the characters in this case), might even distract of what you want the viewer to focus on.

Yeah of course, the background and the details on the walls are my main "selling" point here, especially the pillars. The characters are just there to give it a kind of story/life.

I should stop with the art lines, they'll be useless once I start painting.

I think I once attempted to make a PSO manga/comic, but I just couldn't do all the labor back then. Maybe with my current skill level I'd do better.

I think with my new iPad, working traditionally is gonna take a backseat for a long long time. I only drew traditionally when I was away from home (can't get trough a day without drawing anything heh...), but now I can do it digitally, which has some benefits (mostly being able to paint it).

I guess I already saw some pages, or at least a page from you PSO comic.

I mostly use the digital support for painting and editing (I suck at traditional colouring), when it's comes to manga/comics, I like them being drawn traditionally, I feel like they are more organic that way. And besides, I work faster with a real pen/pensil.

And wow, you draw every day?! lucky you! for me, there are even weeks without arting, especially when I got too much work.

While working on the two last pieces, I discovered that I still suck at perspective, so here's my resolution for 2006 in an artistic direction:

1- I'll focus on perspective by making a lot of drawings like the one here.
2- I'll start working on subjects that aren't really my domain, nature, especially water and vegetation.

Here I was trying to get some dynamic view, but I'm missing a lot, anyway, I'll stop here and try painting this later:

Awesome!

You already seem to understand plenty about perspective, or at least it looks like it. Do you understand how to make grids and how to pick your field of vision? A wider FoV can help make the piece more dynamic, because it creates bigger differences between big and small.

I am more focusing on making my art more dynamic, and making bigger differences in scale, helps a lot. Also lots of foreshortening can help. Also diagonal horizons work. Different ground plane levels can work as well.

Thanks! glad you like it.
I have a general understanding of each perspective subject. Yeah I make my grids manually, since I'm not using PS and I understand how to use the most of basic perspective lines and v.points. And yeah, the Fov is kinda blocked by the buildings on the left here. But I plan to study it in details in order to get that dynamic perspective and that depth effect you mentionned. I already downloaded some video tutorials and gonna give it a go.
Foreshortening is important too, since I see it as a king of a visible perspective line in the piece.
I'll try studying all those and give them some practice :)
