They have a hidden texture behind the walls which you're not supposed to see.

Does Mines on Ultimate look like that on Dreamcast?

That's certainly...different.

Maybe one of SEGA's infamous "leave something in the game that was from the beta version so people will wonder about it and then dig up old Beta ROMs and run them on their computers to find even more hidden things from the beta of the game."

Or maybe, it's a glitch. But still, there was hope in Sonic 2 Beta, and there's hope for secrets in this game.

Everything in Episode 1 is from the Dreamcast. It only looks richer on the GameCube.

It looks like it's the "skybox" for the level.

A skybox is an enclosed 3d shape, textured on the inside, that behaves in a special way: It is always centered around your camera's current viewpoint and is only shown where there are "holes" that would normally just open out onto an empty void. Though the actual construction of the "box" could be any size, it's scaled when shown so that it appears large enough to be a convincing sky.

Every area in PSO has a skybox. For instance, the Ruins have a fairly detailled skybox that goes almost entirely unseen. You can see some of it out the areas with "windows" but it is present throughout the entire level. Play around with your viewpoint behind the waterfall by running up against certain spots on the wall and using the "center view" button. At certain angles the walls will disappaear and you can see through to the "sky".

Skyboxes don't neccesarily have to be an actual cube shape, I believe PSO actually uses a cylinder or dome. There are also other methods of drawing a "sky" in a 3d game, but if you look very carefully at some of the really grand views of the sky (especially in Ep2), you should be able to see some fine lines in the skies of PSO.

Other easy places to look for skyboxes:

Unreal Tournament. UT supports any enclosed 3d shape for a skybox, so some levels actually have a cubic sky while others have cylinders or domes. There's one level in particular I remember for purposely making each side of the cube stand out. The sky was obviously a cube and it looked very surreal. On the other hand, my favorite stage Morpehus uses a cylinder (I've seen the Skybox in the editor, and it's actually much smaller than the level itself http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif).

Quake. Quake uses a sky "dome", viewed from the right angles you can see this pretty easily, the distortion is huge.

Quake 2/Half-Life. Look closely, Quake 2 and it's derivative Half-Life both use the same kind of Skybox: a cube. It's not so easy to see in Quake 2, but Half-Life likes to flaunts some pretty huge vistas (in 32-bit color compared with Q2's 16 to boot). Look for faintly visible seam lines where the sides of the cube come together.

Mines don't have a sky. The buffer is always cleared to a solid color before rendering the next frame.

I remember seeing that with the walk through walls code back in v1. That was some crazy stuff.
