Looking for a simple explanation of how adding affixes works.

I'm past the point in the game where I should start making sure my weapon is as good as it can be but i have been lazy and have been putting off ever adding affixes to my weapon. I have tried searching for guides, Since i have never really attempted it before it all is really confusing to me, lol. I was wondering if someone could take the time to explain to me in a simple manner exactly how it works and maybe what would be the best combination for an r-atk priority weapon. Thanks in advance.
