What is it? I need it to connect with DSL but I have no idea what it is, and also, is it expensive?

Costs $34.95 at store.nintendo.com.

It plugs into the bottom of your gamecube and allows you to plug in an ethernet cable to connect to the internet (either with a router, or directly from the dsl modem).

read me (http://nintendo.com/online/buy_bba.jsp)

If I was to use a non dsl ISP would I still need that? And are there any free ISPs compatible with PSO?

Non DSL is called dial up. Thats a bit slower that ties up the phoneline in order to use dial up you would have to get a modem adapter that would go under your gamecube. Far as free isp goes thats becoming extinct, you would have to likely pay for an isp if you want to play online with your cube.If you can find one chances are it might not work with pso for whatever reason.
