I believe there's a part of this site with that information

http://www.pso-world.com/magguidev3.php

Those are all the new mags and their abilities. It lists what happens when they are fed as well.

It's mostly for ease of feeding or looks. The fact that the mags tend to have many of one kind of effect makes it easy to tailor the mag for your needs. All invincibility for a force, all S&D for a droid, etc.

Hey they do take some effort to raise =/
Although the feeding bonus was something I'd never considered.
I just evolved my Varaha into an Ila and then Dawari at 10/45/55/0 for my HUcast on xbox (traded to a skyly ranger for the final evolve), just because I wanted a cool looking mag (I've had Varaha since V1), Imagine my surprise when I traded it back to Danderdag and noticed that Dimates give THREE TIMES as much POW as they do to a varaha, so now I've got an awesome looking mag, that will get to level 200 incredibl fast. As it stands it gains a level of POW 4 out of every 5 feeding sessions (3 dimates gives it 4/5 of a level)
