Yeah, those GM guys are total jerks for offering players spots to meet up. ;)
If you don't want to join in, it's about as simple as playing elsewhere. Spotlights have never forced players to play in their areas. But if you don't have friends to run with, lack of a spotlight often means that you find yourself at White Beast... all day, every day. So for those players, the spotlight is a great way to get a change of pace and make new friends too.
