BETA TEST #1 SCHEDULE: The test has ended.
- January 27th: Start of Pre-Download
- January 29th, 2021: 15:00 - 21:00 JST
- January 30th, 2021: 15:00 - 25:00 JST (i.e. January 31st, 2021, 01:00 JST)
- January 31st, 2021: 12:00 - 22:00 JST

Tidbits:

- It appears that a regional IP lock has been imposed, preventing those without a VPN from accessing the beta.
- There will be two Closed Beta Tests.
- The first CBT focuses on existing PSO2 players and will also be testing PSO2 data transfer, allowing you to use your PSO2 data.
- The second CBT focuses on all people, including those who have not played PSO2 before. Everyone starts fresh and data from PSO2 and the first CBT will not be carried over.
- If you are accepted into the first CBT, you are automatically enrolled into the second CBT as well.
- The first CBT is scheduled for the weekend at the end of January 2021. See above for the schedule.
- As of now, it has only been announced for PSO2 JP.
- The CBT will take place on PC only. Specs can be found here (https://new-gen.pso2.jp/cbt/entry/spec/).
- The CBT is planned to accommodate 50,000 participants/lottery winners.
- The highest amount of simultaneous connections during the first test on January 29th, 2021 was around 15,000.
- Rewards for participation in the (first) CBT can be found here (https://new-gen.pso2.jp/cbt/entry/about/).
- The purpose of the first CBT is verification of Game Data shared between PSO2 and PSO2 NGS, as well testing the basic game system, server load, AC and AC Scratch systems.
- The purpose of the second CBT is to test the game with even more players, as well as to test corrections made following the first CBT.
- Participants receive 20,000 AC to spend during the first CBT.
- The level cap during the CBT is Level 15.
- You can now equip multiple weapon camos for each weapon type!
- Through glitching, a Bridge room that is yet to be revealed has been found underneath Central City. This can be seen here (https://twitter.com/SaiaPlayer/status/1355121437506367488).
- Skill trees for the six classes available during the first CBT can be found here (https://www.bumped.org/psublog/pso2ngs-closed-beta-skill-trees/).
- Information on the Item Lab can be found here (https://www.bumped.org/psublog/pso2ngs-closed-beta-item-lab/).

haven't seen anywhere on how to register for this, I've been assuming its an automatic enrollment to be picked for this. people are still sorta staying away from the survey though because they feels its a gaijin net. idk i've filled out past PSO2 surveys (balance, content etc) and I'm still playing

EDIT: nevermind found the registration page

There's a note in the requirements page saying that these requirements are only for the beta and that the final requirements will be different.

The page only mentions that it's for 1080p high quality, but these requirements are only for the beta and they'll be different in the release version.

Though, the GPU requirements, they're somewhat close to each of the consoles.

I'm kind of surprised that the min reqs are Win8.1 and DX11. Steam has Win8.1 users at 1.4% of total playerbase, even less than Win7. I was expecting Win10 20H1 as minimum to be honest, which will be the "earliest" Win10 supported version at game's release.

Strages
Dec 22, 2020, 12:22 PM
The only reason 8.1 is even listed is because it's still "officially supported" by Microsoft, and so it will be "officially supported" by Sega and other devs. NGS will probably run on 7 just fine, even... 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 are such similar platforms that what works on one should work on the others. The problem is Microsoft likes their planned obsolescence, and have no problem doing things such as refusing to backport DX12 to 7/8/8.1... except for random exceptions such as the DX12 World of Warcraft on 7 "initiative". Though apparently they also did this (https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/porting-directx-12-games-to-windows-7/). Not that it matters, as DX12 is also super gross right now (just like every DX version at launch) and is not really worth supporting, whereas DX11 is fairly stable right now and is an effective baseline. Vista is also very similar to 7/8/8.1/10, and you could probably get anything that would run on 10 working in Vista with very minor tweaking. Basically, Microsoft has not made a new OS since 2006 (or earlier if you consider the betas); they've just made these big updates and charged you for them. For that reason, don't ever take OS requirements seriously, at least not for Windows (though MacOS is not any better).

The actual game requirements are fairly low, and you can seemingly play the game on low(ish?) settings just fine with a midrange 2014/2015 build. We'll just have to see what retail looks like, I guess.

To be fair, 10 was a free upgrade to anyone with a 7, 8, or 8.1 license and each version has remained free to those users since.

... okay, so I was waiting for people to speak up, but I guess it's not happening so I'll just ask... did other members of this site get selected(I assume most of us gave it a shot)?
There's this theory that they almost exclusively went for japanese players, but I'd like to make sure.

Congrats either way, Sparzyle.

Oh yeah I only got a laptop that barely fits the requirements for lowest settings, but back on 2012 I went onto the PSO2's OBT with a toaster PC so... anything goes I guess, heh

It certainly does seem as though the Japanese players were the overwhelming majority of selected participants, even more so than usual. Several English folks got in. Unfortunately, I did not get in, and several people from that-one-Discord-server got in. I hope some dataminers were among the chosen ones!

I was hoping to get in as well but, sadly I wasn't chosen. I don't really mind though, since I begun playing PSO2 I never really took a break from the game. When NGS eventually comes out it'll be refreshing returning to PSO2.

I hope everyone who is able to participate has fun!

No golden ticket here.

Can't really complain though, having gotten into PSU's and the original PSO2's back in the day. 2 out of 3 ain't bad I guess.

It's pretty much the same problem PSO2 has with every patch that brings a launcher update. Just most Tweaker users don't know
how to fix it, because the Tweaker does it for them with the Fix File Permissions command.
There is a way to do it manually too.

You start the launcher until it shows you this:
[SPOILER-BOX]https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/804049457385177141/804051272335884338/unknown.png[/SPOILER-BOX]

Then DON'T hit the button on that message but go into NGS's pso2_bin folder and check properties for the PSO2updater.exe and hit up the security tab.
Then hit "Advanced" and in the top of the next window you should see "Owner" and a hint, that the current owner can not be displayed.
Hit "Change", type the username of your windows user and hit OK. This should enable further options in the permissions window. Hit "Enable inheritance"
to make Windows use the file permissions from the pso2_bin folder and hit OK. Close the properties and THEN hit the button in the launcher.
This should should close the message and the launcher afterwards.

Now check back in your NGS's pso2_bin folder. The other files (at least some of them) should've lost their permissions now too. Check file per file and
do the same as before - take ownership for the file and then hit the Enheritance button. In the end, all of the files in the folder should have their
permissions restored and if you open NGS again, the launcher should open and start downloading the necessary files.

It's a tricky procedure and sometimes it does not work on the first try, but it in the end it works for me going through this. As much as I'm not a tweaker
person, I hope they will work on it and eventually make it work for NGS later on, so this manual permission changing is not necessary anymore.

Actually 249 means the server is unreachable. There's a regional IP block going on. If you didn't get in but can hit the servers you'd be getting the error 828 instead.

Guess a JP VPN is the answer? Anyone know any good ones?

I remember mudfish being quite good for playing Monster Hunter Frontier but I don't think it's worth getting one for a closed beta. Since NGS will be merged with PSO2 telepipe will probably do the job.

I was looking at this, but I'm wary because two different VPNs I tried failed to allow me to connect. I don't want to shell out $5 and then have issues anyway, you know?

Do they have a free trial, or a money back option if it doesn't work out?

SoftEther may also be an option.
I've got SoftEther installed now, but I'm not sure which VPN to use with them. I'm trying CactusVPN.

During the DDoS way back when, I used AWS to get connected, but I seem to remember it being a huge hassle, and I don't know that it's worth all of that for a weekend of beta testing.

Not that I know of. The first month is just 4.99$ instead of 9.99$. But I don't think there's a way to get your money back if you are not satisfied.
It worked pretty well for me, IPVanish has a couple of servers in Tokyo and the connection seemed good.

If you use this https://www.vpngate.net/en/download.aspx you can download SoftEther with preset VPNs from VPN Gate. There is a couple japanese VPNs in there that you can
connect to just by clicking. If the speed on them is sufficient, it should work with one of those as well. But don't forget its a public VPN and Sega "may" take a closer look on your account
if it's swapping IP adresses too much and stuff like that.

You might really want to try mudfish then. It has a subscription but what most people use is its pay per traffic data plan. You put some money on your account and it uses it depending of your usage. You can select which program uses the vpn so watching youtube videos at the same time doesn't affect it (and does not take your money...) so if you're just gaming less than $5 should be enough for an entire year if not more. They offer some credits when you sign up which should be enough for the beta. SoftEther can be really unstable sometimes but you might want to give it a try.

I've been in both tests for the beta and neither has had a region lock on it, I've been able to play from abroad with no issues. It does look like prioritized older accounts than newer ones, those in the first alpha test who had frequent logins over the last year got a "special invite" e-mail thanking for a decade of support (myself included). I haven't seen anyone who started playing in the last year in the tests yet.

There are foreign users that had to use a VPN to be able to connect, so there's apparently some form of lock at least.

I wish we had enough people who got into the beta to actually find out, because the error hit a lot of the Japanese players according to LINE and Twitter. It might not be a region issue and actually a connection one.

Looks like my using of a more recent account for fear of Sega nuking my main one backfired, as suspected. With that being said, I feel very well informed when it comes to NGS, I'm kind of okay with waiting actually.

Well I can for sure tell you of 4 german/austrians who had to use VPN, and at least 3 from the USA. While 2 people I know from JP did not need one.
Never got an error, just outside of JP it showed the servers as in maintenance.

Also, out of our ancient alpha Accounts none got picked, but completely new accounts got picked for the beta. (But that could be simply bad luck, just mentioning it because 7 alpha accounts didnt get picked but 7 new ones did so there is definately no alpha-account preference)

So I kinda had the completely opposite experience of yours. As did all the people I know that got in.

same experience with friends and others with the VPN. the CBT pickings seem to favor newer people over older accounts seeing as all the ppl i knew who made fresh accounts got selected but their main accounts were ignored. i guess it makes sense since Sega wants to draw in new people but i guess only a few selected older accounts are really needed. idk just my guess
