I played on the Gamecube version where multiplayer doesn't save your progress. Is that true across all versions? What would be the best way to play this with my friend?

Been ages since I played, but as far as I'm aware, PSOGC, PSO+GC and even PSOX didn't save your progress in any way for unlocked areas.

Should pretty much work the same as when playing an online game. Difficulty is based on level requirements rather than story progression. And unlocked areas when you start a fresh game are determined by the progression of the 'host' (whoever is player 1).

PSOGC or PSOBB

Hoping that answers all your questions!

I know it's probably too late for this to be helpful, but I've played on both Gamecube and Blue Burst.

On most (all?) BB servers, every area is always unlocked for everyone.
On Gamecube, areas are locked until you unlock them in single player. So if you wanted to jump straight into ruins with a friend, you'd have to have unlocked the ruins in single player with whatever character will be selected as player one. This is difficulty specific as well.

Actually that is useful. I jumped on to a private server and it allowed me to jump into any level without having to unlock anything. I'm glad to know that that's standard.
