View Full Version : Bastardizing...Video Games

Example One:
Commercial is about a kid who struggles with reading. He is holding a PlayStation controller, kinda quickly tapping the buttons, when all we can hear is blips and *peeeeooowwww* sounds from the television. It's almost as if the PS1 is an Atari.

Example Two:
Energizer commercial. Grampa versus his grandson. They're playing on some GBA-knockoff thing and both are madly bashing buttons. It's a fighting game, yet, with the graphics around the calibur of Soul Calibur. We wonder how such a thing can pull off such a feat and not drain a couple of double-A's so fast.

Example Three (pretty recent):
Sunny-D commercial. Kid is just glued to a GBA knockoff. Again, crappy sounds and blips, and the kid is mashing buttons like crazy. The D-Pad is a bunch of buttons.

This is kind of like how people blah video games: eye-gluing button mashers. I'm sick and tired of these people who make these games look like that. Damn, if they'd actually play a game, they'd realize it'd have a plot and we're not repeatedly pressing a button 10 times in a second (hell, if they were even smarter, the game wouldn't register all of those presses either).

Why can't people take games seriously? And I quote a line from EGM, referring some Mayor or something about Dead or Alive XTreme Beach Volleyball (well, not exactly, but it almost went like it):

"...that the game lets you adjust breast size and give the option to let the characters be topless or not..."

See, Joe Lieberman and similar people like him, who are against all that is violent and obscene in games, are like the parents of young kids: they don't bother to look at the ESRB rating, nor play the game itself. Hey, while we're at it, movie ratings.

Morons.

the funny thing was, that topless code was a big joke in EGM for April Fool's day.... you can't do that...

There was another commercial awhile back, for cereal or Eggo waffles or something, don't remember what kind, but the older brother was playing a GBA... my boyfriend noted that not only was the game system upside down (cartridge was supposed to be at the top, and it was on the bottom) there was no cartridge in the system....

Another magazine, PSM, ran that Valkarie Wilde spoof, and that got some national coverage. I think it even got on NBC or ABC. Hilarious.

Why can't those beaureaucrats get rid of rap music...? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I think people who want to ban videogames are stupid.

It is true that some videogames contain controversial content, but it has not been proven that videogames are a bad infulence on children. Also if you were doing your job as a parent, your children wouldn't be playing those type of games in the first place.

I knew this young kid...about 6 or 8 years old.

His dad bought him an N64 with about 5 or 10 games one day.

He played some pretty violent games, like Turok. On their computer was a copy of Duke Nukem 3D.

I didn't go over to their place after awhile. But last I heard, he was in therapy...

Oh wait, then I remembered how out of control they were... leaving their toys all over the place and just buying new crap. The place that's kind of like a hallway is a place for their Legos?.

Video Games affected me too. Playing You Don't Know Jack made me sarcastic. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

In Charlies Angles, Drew walks into a house where two kids are playing playstation. Both kids are hammering the buttons and having a good time, the game they are playing; Final Fantasy 7(possibly 8, I know it was one of the crappy next gen ones, not sure which).

Actually, I was sure in that scene that only one of the kids were playing it. As a matter of fact, I read in a video game magazine (either EGM, or PSM) that somebody pointed it out to the distributor of the movie (Columbia?), and the distributor actually replied saying that they'd fix it. Does anyone notice the result?

Fresh Prince of Belair (that how you spell it?) showed Will and Carlton playing on a NES while using Megadrive controllers in one episode. God knows how they plugged them in.

My boyfriend has worked video game retail for the past two years... I've worked there seasonally (mainly Christmas) and once in the summer... Oh the stories I could tell...

One that stands out in my mind was a lady who bought her teenage son 'soldier of fortune' - a nice shooting game involving sniping that's rated M... and she tried to return it (with the poor humiliated kid being dragged along) because it was 'too violent'.

My boyfriend pointed out that there was a 'low violence mode' that could be enabled, and that we couldn't take it back as the game was not defective, it said M and why, etc. She decided he was being rude and unhelpful and said she'd be calling the manager...

Its stuff like this that makes the world so screwed up....

I just saw the Sunny-D comercial... That is so jacked! The kid was like unable to do anything besides play the damn thing, and it sounded so cheap... Like some ancient Asteroids game being played. At the end the kid walks into a wall... Retarded. Talk about making us gamers look like retarded idiots.

My dad once took away the game Contra Hard Corps.

Now lookit me. I went through Mortal Kombat, Quake III Arena, Whiplash, GTA 3, and other stuff where ya kill people. And it r0x0rz. *dances*

That's the nifty thing about violent games: they allow you to unleash all your anger on a few pixels and have some fun without really killing anybody. The world rocks!

I hate to say it, but studies do show that people who play violent videogames (and watch violent moives and pornography and engage in violent behavior against inanimate objects) do no show any decrease in violent tendencies (ie they do not work out their aggression); it may even cause greater aggressive tendencies because those games are arousing.
Does that mean we should ban violent games? No; but it does mean that we can't claim that violent games keep us from hitting someone (unless its because we're not in the same room as the person we're angry at).
And I do hate the way that commercials make us look like button mashers, with no brains or social skills. The games I play most often involve higher-order thinking skills (my mom can't handle them) and PSO allows for me to be social without having to consume alcohol or pay cover charges or wear scanty clothing. PSO can teach us many of life's great lessons, just make sure you do your homework and housework before turning on the cube lol http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

People who used to be gamers back when there were a max of four or so buttons on the controllers are funny.

There was a commercial for Honeycombs with the kid playing a GBA-type thing, with suspiciously good graphics.

My mom calls everything a Nintendo or a Sega. o_O;

hey, i'm not that old, my first games were a joystick and one button. i love my commodore64 and vic20, lol. and my brother whom is now 33, still games with the best of them (i could kick his butt on anything though)... maybe its because he still lives at home like a big kid?

my mother used to call every system a nintendo, and then it became playstation.

the really sad thing about bashing us gamers, is that it rubs off on practically everyone, so now gramps has issues with the brainless youth. he really should be worring about his retirement... grr.

i like, totally agree that they should ban games, dude.
you know why i like, say this?

because doom like, totally taught me how to shoot.

i'm also like, a gamer so i totally fall into this stereotypical trap and like, have like, half a brain, dude. yo. and it makes me totally brain dead, and stuff.

they should ban adverts and complaints. not games, as they're the things doing the most damage here. adverts make us look like we can't hold a pencil unassisted, and complaints try to have games reduced back to pong levels. wait, no, complaints are to get rid of games, as pong obviously teaches us to hit square balls with increasing incriments to a slow starting speed.

maybe religion should be looked into for banning first.

It's not religion that's the problem, it's the people who use it as a context for getting rid of things they hate. x_x

Yeah, just like the other day, I went to the Arms Shop and bought an Assault +5 and ran around on the walls and shit, going "lol 4ll yu0r b43s 4r3 b3l0ng t00 m3" while shooting at all of the assholes that make fun of me because I play games. Hard-Hard-Hard combo, if you gotta know.

By the way, not one of the f*ckers dropped a red box...

Anyone remember that FF7 promotion several years back by um... Pepsi I believe? It showed Santa Claus mashing buttons on one of them new, bonafide dual analog controllers while... summoning Ifrit. Yes, button mashing on a freaking RPG. The jolly old fatman was playing it like freakin' Track and Field.
