You are stripped down to only essential gear for each "challenge" and after completion of the challenge, you will be endowed once again of all your former 'wears'. Anything you pick up during a challenge you can only use during that challenge because you revert to your former state after completeting the same. The links provided by LollipopLolita will give you all you need to know....and you WILL want to use the maps...it aint called challenge mode for nothing! Enjoy!

About the music:

Because the game is offline and has to handle a bit more than it should, it makes some changes. If you're in Pioneer 2, you're always going to hear the Pioneer 2 music no matter where you go, until you go into a level.

From what I have heard on the music, the music used is kind of the "action" music. It takes a bit of explaining: go to the BGM test and see how the Forest has two soundtracks? Hear them both: one is calm, the other is more "exciting". PSO will take the "exciting" music tracks in Multi-Mode when you enter an area.
