View Full Version : Lag and the BBA

I play PSO using the BBA. I have a DSL service which is really good: 860s KB download, 110s KB upload. Most games that I play, downloading, and browsing are very fast, but for some reason, I still get an equal amount, if not more, lag on PSO than my 56k counterparts. Are there any other BBA users out there who have this same problem? o.o;;

Wow... can't say that I've had that problem. There are times when Cable can be a bit busy and I notice a little slow down and once in a blue moon get disconnected, but most times I'm sailing along just fine. Do you play during really busy times or something? Kind of odd you're having that problem though. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Didn't have any problems like that, ever.
Make sure that while playing PSO, there isn't someone else using the connection for optimum speed.

Muku,

With DSL, we are given a dedicated line, cable is very different -- with cable, you share the same connection with your entire neighborhood. @.o;;

Benoit, do you BA6 much? Because this lag problem that I get is mainly with BA6...

Yea, wasn't sure about ASDL. I dunno, never used it, but later this year I'll probably end up with it to where I move.

But even with cable I rarely get lag. Kind of interesting you are though.

it could be that somehow whenever u play with a few persons they might have not a good or stable connection and when packetloss happens it in general slows you down.

It also could be that your isp doesnt have a good connection to where the gameserver is located(overused or certain servers which are crappy).

Also running this thing through ICS might be not that good when u use your windows machine to route internet traffic (windows is notoriously bad with 2 network interface cards inserted).

Funny i've been using 2 NICs in my pc for ICS and haven't had a single problem.

Yeah u could have no problems at all or u could have problems, it is the way how windows handles hardware.

I used to run Kali on multiple computers as soon as i add a network card my ping shot up http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif.

if u remove (physical) your 2nd nic u will notice improved performance. Alot of u wont notice the difference. But certain problems may arise due to this setup.

That is why people buy routers. I myself have a decdicated linux router.

I do not use a PC to share my internet connection. I use a combination of hubs and routers (Netgear FR114P router with other Netgear and Linksys hubs). This is how my network in my house is set up:

- Ethernet DSL modem connects to hub A.

- Hub A connects to GameCube and to Internet IN Port of Router (that way the GameCube bypasses the router for internet access, it is directly connected to the modem).

- Router connected to a series of other hubs, B & C, in the house to distribute the connection to other PCs.

According to http://www.dslreports.com, with their California based server:
Clocked Download Speed: 860+ Kbps
Clocked Upload Speed: 115+ Kbps

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.google.com : 30ms

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.yahoo.com : 27ms

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.pso-world.com : 117ms

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.sonicteam.com : 225ms

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.isao.net : 237ms

One of the PCs in my house runs a series of servers: Apache/PHP/MySQL, Xmail, PSO Proxy, Syslog

But I always close the ports for those services on the router whenever I play PSO -- doing so only seems to help a little, though.

Could someone who also uses a BBA please post your ping times to http://www.sonicteam.com and http://www.isao.net here? If you don't know how to measure ping rates, here's how:

1) On your PC, click on Start, then Run.
2) Type "command.com" (or "cmd.exe" for NT systems)
3) Click OK.
4) Now type "ping " and then the name of the site you want to ping.
5) At the last line it outputs, it should say something similar to: "Minimum = 230ms, Maximum = 240ms, Average = 237ms"
6) Post here what your avarage times were.

I'm based in the uk so these are gonna look kinda high compared to yours since your pinging US sites from within the US but anyway here's mine on cable:

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.google.com : 99ms

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.yahoo.com : 98ms

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.pso-world.com : 156ms

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.sonicteam.com : 292ms

Average ping time (round trip) to http://www.isao.net : 286ms

Compared to the 14ms i get pinging http://www.yahoo.co.uk

I can totally relate to Duke...I myself use cable internet, adelphia, i work for adelphia, thats why i use it @ 25.00 a month. Anyways...my PC's internet speed seems to work fine, but when it comes to playing PSO I often frustrate when i cant pick up an item right away or when i talk it, comes out 3 seconds later. i know very little about networking..i tried to DMZ Host the second port im using for the Gamecube, that seemed to work for a couple days but I still lag. Many ppl i talk to say DSL is better because of the dedicated line, well i play after midnight, so lag should be at a minimal. I've called Lynksys a couple times and Adelphia even came out and found no problem....if anyone has any dfeedback please do so.

i play pso PC right now and i have a cable modem. When i had the gamecube version, (56k) i would get a little bit of item pick up lag, but not nearly as much as i am right now which seems backwards. Of course it could be due to the fact that i can only play on the trial servers for the pc version, but it still doesnt make sense.

Of course the loading times going to another area on the pc version are like 300% faster..

Loading times on PSO for PC is short because the areas are being loaded from your harddisk, and not removable storage.

I suppose part of the reason some BBA'ers still get lag is because of Sega's server. I remember playing BA on a less crowded JP ship once and getting almost no lag.

I have done it a couple times, and haven't had any problems.

These problems make me skeptical. I want one, but I have a 56k modem and Mindspring internet service. Do you know if that'll work? Is it worth it? Or shall I wait till I get a new computer? I'm relying on you guys.

The BBA isn't "more laggy" than the 56k modem, it's just not the vast improvement I expected it to be.

well, what about the v.90? should i get that? will it suffice? i have a computer that is 7 years old.... shall i wait till later?

here's an example to any programmers that can perhaps help: my computer takes several seconds when i press the minimize
button.
is the screen for online my TV screen or the computer screen? and does it depend upon the speed of the computer?

In my finite knowledge (yes, finite), I believe a BBA is a broadband adapter

I am using adsl, verizon adsl and not a problem I am using a linksys 4 port router and not a thing of a problem. Only time I had so far is when my phoneline messes up and I would have to do the soft reset to prevent any harm done to my characters. Also when I tried to follow a friend and it would just have the globe spinning, other then that I get go to one lobby to another in flying speed. Not to mention when its time to do a quest it would tell me please wait for others to finish loading. And little or no waiting when I am downloading a game to my gameboy advance
