Alternate Avatars

Ive seen a few people having avatars other than the ones listed in the "your account." Could someone please tell me how to do that? It's not that i dont like my avatar. That guy is cool. Id just rather have another of my favorite characters as my avatar. Hisame Shizumaru. :::points to sig:::

Well, those people have custom avatars because they're either mods or they've won contests.
