Online play

Last night for the first time, I joined a single player online. It was the Forest level, and the player (minijun) was a level 6. I'm a level 65 right now, so I just helped out, and revived her a couple of times. We beat the boss dragon, and returned to Pioneer 2.
When I got back, (minijun had left before me) there was a pile of fantastic red weapons boxes and technique boxes! I let minijun have it all.
My question is, is this normal gameplay?

..Was this on Xbox, or the 'Cube?

This was on GameCube. I don't remember all of the goods there, but one was a +99 Photon Drops.

Some of them were most likely dupes... But you never know. Did someone join, drop the stuff, and leave?

Same here. My best weapon is the Sole Survivor grinded to a paltry +21.
