Well, I remove my mag for level ups so my stats aren't "maxed out" and I get bonuses. I usually waste my photon burst beforehand if I'm at 100 because removing your mag drops your meter to 0.
But this time when I hit 100, I only had a few hundred EX to go to a level, and I didn't want to risk gaining a level by accident, so I removed my mag. Well, I went to cast shifta on my now weaker character, and my 'right button' menu was blank. Well, I figured that was odd, killed 2 enemies and gained a level. Then when I put my mag back on, there was photon bursts back on the right menu, despite my meter being empty. Worried about causing glitches and messing up my game, I cast it to get rid of it because my meter started charing again and it did diddly damage instead of the usual 1000+. My right-menu was back to normal, my meter started charging again afterwards, no harm done. But still odd.
