I'd go with piano. It's more versitile and it's more the foundation for composing music of any style. Also it's easier to transfer skills from the piano to other instruments, from what I've heard at least.

believe me, piano players rule! Who else gets to be called a pianist!? Actually, I also play clarinet and I find my piano background knowledge helps A LOT in helping others and myself in the band (school band, of course...duh.)
Violins are pretty, but they hurt your fingers and arms because of the odd postuer (sp)

Meh, you can just get a keyboard for around $150. They sound pretty good and can do just about all the things a regular piano can do. They even have like touch sensitve keys so depending on how hard you hit the key it's louder or softer and sustains the sound for differnt lengths. If you want a real piano you can get a scape saving practice piano they are pretty small and still sound pretty good. Not concert quality of course but good none the less.

P.S. Come back to GC PSO gink!!!

Piano. My hands wouldn't work on a violin.
