i only have four and the other explaination i can think of is using another memory card. Please escuse my newbie ways.

I'm not sure how it works on Xbox, but on GC the only way to have 8 characters is 2 memory cards.

4 game files per PSO file in HD
12 characters per game file
48 total characters.

You can import 4 characters on Gamecube. But U can't play Solo with them. So I'd say 2 memory cards.
