A buddy who can't sign up at PSO World has the following problem:

He uses BT Broadband as an ISP. He has ICS enabled on his XP Home Edition. He has got a RJ45 cable, a network card(Ethernet), and a BBA. When he tries to connect(Auto-Detect option), it gives him Error No. 12, which is: Incorrect settings. Then he selected the "Manually set an IP Address" option, inputted the correct info as mentioned in the FAQ, tried to connect, and he got the same error. He verified his network card IP, and the Subnet Mask. The IP needed changing. The network card's IP was 192.168.0.1, while the FAQ tells you to input 192.168.1.1. He couldn't change that, so he changed Gateway in his settings to the correct one, 192.168.0.1. He still couldn't connect, it gave him the same error. He then tried WINIPCFG to find his DNS addresses, but it didn't work. I remember having connected to PSO using the same method, but using a proxy instead. He can't find the settings of his network card other than the usual IP and Subnet Mask. Then, I couldn't help him further.

Anyone had the same problem or know what the issue is? He would be happy to know. Thanks in advance.

Did he set up the proxy? I thought that when you had ICS set up you needed to tell the connected computer(s)/device(s) to go through the proxy.

I use this method to connect to PSO gamecube, and X box live.
The critical peice of kit in this set up is a Crossover RJ45 cable between the gamecube BBa and the P.Cs network card.
This is how i set my Gamecube up

On the P.C set up internet conection sharing, plug the gamecube into the P.Cs network card using a CROSSOVER RJ45 cable, then switch on the gamecube, your P.C should tell you that a local area conection is conected regardless of weather or not the Gc is set up at this point.

On the gamecube PSO network set up:
select provider option, then leave everything at default ( make sure that automaticly obtain IP address is selceted) if you have messed up the gc set up delete the network set up file on the GC memory card and start again.

this also works for x box live, again selct automatic if asked.

He doesn't see "local area conection is conected". Where is he supposed to see that?

Also, does anyone know how to see the difference between a Patchable and a Crossover cable. I asked him which it was but it came with his PC.

hes probably got a patch lead as these are comonly used to conect P.Cs to broadband modems.
if you can see the coloured wires inside the RJ45 lead pugs they should look like this

Standard
http://www.cix.co.uk/~kgolding/Guides/Network/images/rj45_connector.gif

Crossover
http://www.cix.co.uk/~kgolding/Guides/Network/images/rj45_crossover.gif

a crossover lead will have one end wired aas a standard plug and the other end as a crossover.

you can buy these and other such gubbins at places like http://www.maplin.co.uk although they have a strong high street prescence, so if you can buy from a shop, adn ask for a crossover cable long enough to connect, if you have get the wrong cable you can take it back easily as you have been mis-sold .

He doesn't have a router. He uses some kind of DSL modem without Ethernet ports. So he uses the network card solution.

The ADSL broadband modem comonly suplied by BT is usualy one of these two

http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=tbn:1dPlgB4VVPQC:www.zenadsl.com/assets/images/equipment/st330.jpghttp://images.google.co.uk/images?q=tbn:BGtLAwpVKy8C:www.draytek.co.uk/products/image/stusb_150.jpg
both of which plug into a spare USB port.
USB modems are the most common type used in the UK, and are usualy bundled into the ISP package when you sign up

Here is my setup:

I have:

my broadband ISP as Plusnet
a Dynamode USB broadband modem with no ethernet ports
PC 10/100Mbit network card
RJ45 Crossover network cable
GC BBA

I just connect my GC BBA to my network card via the RJ45 crossover cable and set my network settings to automatic. That's all I have to do. I think it was made easier for me because I currently network my PC to my brother's and therefore, ICS is already done. However, since his PC isn't working at the moment, I just plug my GC BBA into the network card instead. Once I fix his PC, I will have to have 2 network cards in my PC instead. I really wished I chose a router instead of a USB modem now when I went for broadband!
