Rifle because of its super-long range.

I have yet to play a ranger that didn't have a couple of different weapon types in the inventory at all times.

To begin with:

Rifles are good for sniping enemies at longer distances. Due to their high accuracy, they can also make some of the nice special like Hell and Demon's work.

Once enemies close in or if the room is small, it is time for:

Mechguns. Their damage is unmatched, so there is not much competetion here. They do require some training to use due to the long recovery time and narrow aim angle.

Before ultimate though:

Shots rule all. Keep it grinded, stock up on ?/Power units, and do only heavy attacks, and you'll be cleaning rooms out before the enemies have finished putting their claws into the air.
They also make quick work of multi-location bosses.

So, it really depends on the situation.
