Start+B+Y(or X). Soft reset would be your friend.

Just pull the line out. The game will disconnect and save and quit. You're only changing ships, your files arn't "open" so to speak and you shouldn't lose anything anyway. You can either wait for a time out and the game will auto disconnect, pull the line, or just shut it off. With the first two you items and character will be fine, with the last, they should be fine. I've had it happen to me, I just DC and log back on, no loses from it all.
