Does a crossover cable have a crossover at one end or both ends?

one end, if you can see the wires through the plug on the cable you will notice that they are in a different order on each end.

if the crossover was done on a box and then cat 5 to the computer from the box, would that still work as a cross over?

Box as in a switch/hub/router?

You need a crossover cable to directly connect two things together.

If you have a switch/hub/router, that acts as a crossover, so you can plug in a straight through cable from each component into the hub, and it will do the same as if the two components were connected with a crossover cable.

heres the set up
cat5 from cube to a box...just a box with rj45 plugs on it...in that box the crossover takes place and then from the other port it goes into the computer with regular cat5...will that undo the crossover or is it me being a gimp?

Sounds like youve got a router, most routers auto detect if your using a crossover cable, to connect the cube to the 'box' you just need a bog standard network lead.

it is NOT router. It is just a box that acts as a crossover. It is in no way attached to my DSL line

from what i can make out your gamecube is conected to your "mystery box" which is conected to your ADSL/VDSL/SDSL line
also conected to this box is another device, possibly a p.c.

You seem to be unsure of how to string everything together, so in order to get help on stuff like crossovers, patch leads, crossover cables, routers, modems, internet conection sharing, and getting online with your gamecube you need to provide information on what kit youve got ( modems, cables etc), and how you are trying to conect it all together.

Starting with the conection to the line.
you say your on DSL ( ADSL/VDSL/SDSL )
so in that case youve got a DSL modem of some type
the basic ones are usualy either
USB modems, usb lead to your p.c
Ethernet out, one ethernet (rj45) out thats conected to a network card (rj45) socket on your p.c

you caould also have a combined router/modem, these sconect to your DSL line phone socket, like the above devices, but usualy have more than one ethernet out (rj45 sockets)

As far as crossover cables ( and any other type of crossover) go, if you are conecting your gamecube to your P.C (internet conection sharing) you need a crossover, anything else, and you dont.

I am using the method on the sticky on this forum for windows 98 SE. The
mystery boxis like to rj45 sockets that you would normally find on a wall, they merge into one and go down one piece of cat5. There two wires that are plugged into this box are regular cat5 with rj45. The crossover is on the box. Should this still work?

im not too sure what exactly this box is, but at a rough guess, it could just be a two to one adaptor.
try a crossover cable and run that into yor modem.
