This is for Windows users, I am on XP, it may be the same on every other version as well...

Right Click on my computer. Go to Manage. Go to Services and Applications. Go to Services. Go to Messenger. Click "Stop".

No with this information...YOU CAN QUIT LAGGING MY COUNTERSTRIKE GAMES WHEN I HAVE AN AWP ON YOU! kthxbi

I've got a decent pop up stopper installed anyway, but that's still kinda handy to know. Cheers dude.

This just disables the messenger service built into Windows, only stopping pop-up dialog boxes sent from malicious companies trying to con you into buying their software to disable them from spamming you with their ad, but doesn't affect other types of pop-up ads. For that, I would recommend Pop-Up Stopper.

That thing works wonders.

Yeah, Calus was beset with those things until I figured out how to disable it. As for regular popups... I just use Mozilla and tell it not to allow them, and other than the PM popups from here, I haven't had a popup ad yet. IE is enough story. Yike. (Sadly, I have to use it sometimes, because it will ocasionally render bad code - Had to use it last night for a site where all the image urls used BACKSLASHES. >_<)

It doesn't seem to be on Windows 98...

No, it isn't, AFAIK. I'm not sure if it's in NT/2k, but it is in XP... You know the dialog boxes that pop up like... Say you exit a program with a file open that hasn't been saved lately. A box pops up asking if you want to save it, not save it, or cancel. Kind of like that, but with just one button. Those'll pop up every couple of minutes while you're online with XP and drive you nuts, unless you disable that.

Update Windows. If they are the same messages that I had, there can be solved by downloading the latest Windows service packs.

Stopping pop-up ads by running a program in the background isn't the best solution. Get ad-aware, and you will completely take off any spyware that is causing pop-up ads to... well pop-up and you don't use any system resources.

Also, make sure you run msconfig (start menu: run) to take off unnecessary applications that are automatically running everytime you start the computer.

I find that the Altavista toolbar works pretty well in blocking popups. I only disable it when entering PSOW because it blocks the "You have a new private message" popup http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif. Other than that, I haven't seen a popup in quite a long time.
