View Full Version : Depressing songs

I know, I know. Yet another uninspired music topic but you'll live.

Some of the most depressing songs I've ever heard tend to be the best written (Well in my eyes). So I'm wondering, anyone know of any good ones?

Feel free to include songs you feel help you cope with life day to day or just songs you enjoy.:)
Hell even songs that have made you cry!

Here's two brilliant ones I've heard.

Mad World - Gary Jules (Donnie Darko Soundtrack)
Humpty Dumpty Love song - Travis

Edit: And could I have some explanations as to why you find a song upsetting or sad? Maybe even some quotes from them?
I don't want yet another song topic just full of names and no explanation. It's not exactly a thrilling read. :)

Just a Day by Feeder.

Its one of my favourite songs, and is actualy a happy song in musical terms. but if you sit down and think about the lyrics, they are actually quite deppressing.

Waking up at twelve in my clothes again
Feel my head explode from a night of gin another night out late
I don't wanna drink don't wanna be a clown
Gotta get my feet back on the ground before it pulls me in

How come we've ended up like this
And who's gonna catch me when I'm coming down to hit the ground again

All by myself (Waking up at twelve in my clothes again)
cause I don't wanna drag you down hold you down
Cause you're a friend I blame myself (Feel my head explode from a night of gin)
I guess you think it's funny now funny now

On the underground with the freaks and frowns
Looking at the world through silver clouds but then it all came down
I gotta rise above the emotional flood
Gotta cut these ropes around my hands pull myself around

I admit, there are far more deppressing songs out there, but for the actual music that goes with it its all weird and strange :S

[edit] also, although some of it may not sound that bad, its the way its sung. you have to hear it to get the gist of some parts :S

Good choice there Zane.

I almost put "Just a Day" myself.
You're spot on though. At first glace it sounds quite a cheery uplifting song and alot of people may not get it at first. I know I had to listen to it a few times to fully understand it.

All by myself.
I don't want to hold you down, Drag you down, 'Cus your a friend.
I blame myself.
Like Zane said, in text form, It's quite apparent that it's a sad song.
But you'd had to of heard it to fully understand what we mean.

One of my favourite songs also.

'Magdalene' from the SH2 soundtrack.
Always makes me feel like complete crap after listening to it.
'fade' and 'waste' by Staind. Their music always makes me depressed, but those songs especially.
'Life's gonna suck' by denis leary. He speaks a lot of truth, so yeah, it makes me sad.
'by the way' by the red hot chili peppers. I honsetly have NO idea why, but it makes me upset.
'lulluby' and 'one last breath' by creed.
Jesus, those songs made me burst into tears when I had first heard them. (I was in a really depressed mood back then, much like I am now.)
And quite a few more, but I'll save those for later.

I don't know wether to take that as a compliment or an insult. :)
It was recently reccomended to me by a friend. (Apparently it's a cover?)

It's something I wouldn't listen to normally, but even though I've only just discovered it, I'm classing it as one of my all time faves.

The vocalist has this little tremble in his voice and it makes the lyrics sound even more distressing.

I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad. The dreams in which I'm dieing are the best I've ever had.
Coincedently it happens to be in "Donnie Darko" which I've been meaning to see in ages.
Just haven't got round to it yet.

Kizaragu >>> it is more a compliment. But I was surprised, that song is not very famous. If 'cover' means it is originally from another band, then yes it is : Tears for Fears. (too lazy to look up "cover" http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif)

And I do not know about US, but in France the movie Donnie Darko is not famous at all. But I really like it !

I add :
Sattelite of Love by Lou Reed.

"Sometimes It Hurts" & "Waking Up Beside You" --Stabbing Westward

In my opinion, both are pretty well written and seem to have quite a bit of the sense that something grand has been lost.

"Somtimes It Hurts"
Six o'clock in the morning, my head is ready to explode. I can't believe I made it home alive. I don't remember where I went or what I was drinking; and now it's made me sick and I'm not denying that I get this way when I try to get over you. I get this way when I try to get over you. Sometimes it hurts so much to lose the one you love. Sometimes it hurts so much to lose the one you love.

I tried so hard to hate you but it only makes it all worse. I only end up hating myself and as my hatred grows so do the lies, it's hard to face the truth sometimes. God I feel so useless! God I hate myself when I try to get over you. I hate myself. Will I ever get over you?

Sometimes it hurts so much to lose the one you love. Sometimes it hurts so much to lose the one you love.

And after all this time you'd think I'd understand the way you feel, but no...I only think about myself and it's driving you away. I always knew it would one day.

Sometimes it hurts so much to lose the one you love. Sometimes it hurts so much to lose the one you love. Sometimes it hurts so much to lose the one you love. Sometimes it hurts

"Waking Up Beside You"
I've been so alone for so long. Forgotten by the world, forgotten to myself. Your effervescent eyes have awakened me and brushed the dust away, but I knew you'd never stay .

So I memorized the color of your eyes as I lost myself inside you. And I memorized the way our legs entwined as I drifted off beside you.

I miss...God I miss waking up beside you.

At night I cling to you, I'm so afraid...Afraid the day will come and I'll wake and find you gone. But you promised that you'd not abandon me and kissed my fears away, but I woke up to that day.

But I had memorized the way our eyes would meet reflected in the bathroom mirror. And I memorized your naked silhouette as you slowly brushed your hair. I miss...God I miss waking up beside you.

I've been so alone for so long; I forgot how much it hurts to wake up so alone.

But I memorized how warm your body felt as you lay half asleep beside me. And I memorized the way the sunlight filled the room and played upon your body.

I miss...God I miss waking up beside you. I miss...God I miss

Not bad. BTW Stabbing Westward is great http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif Check out Rob d's Furious Angels lyrics.

rob d - "furious angels"

Like a sentence to death
I've got no options left
I've got nothing to show now
I'm down on the ground
I've got seconds to live
And you can't go now

Cause love, like an invisible bullet has shot me down and I'm bleeding - yeah, I'm bleeding
And if you go, furious angels will bring you back to me

You're a dirty needle
You're in my blood and there's no curing me
And I want to run
(like the blood from a wound)
to a place you can't see me

Cause love, like a blow to the head, has left me stunned and I'm reeling - yeah, I'm reeling
And if you go, furious angels will bring you back to me

You're a cold piece of steel between my ribs and there's no saving me
And I can't get up from this wet crimson bed that you made for me

Cause love, like a knife in the back, has cut me down and I'm bleeding - yeah, I'm bleeding
And if you go, angels will run to defend me - to defend me

Cause I can't get up
I'm as cold as a stove
I can feel the life fade from me
I'm down on the ground
I've got seconds to live
Then what's there that waits for me?

Cause love, like a sentence of death has left me stunned, and I'm reeling - yeah, I'm reeling
And if you go, furious angels will bring you back to me

The most depressing songs I know...:

Can Still See the Light (gee, I wonder where that's from... The solo piano version can get really depressing)
I Remember (I don't remember what it's from...)
Memory (from Cats)
First of May (by Sarah Brightman)
Beloved (by Kate Price)

And I'm too tired to think of any more right now.

oh this is easy. all those songs are great, but easily the most depressing band is:

Joy Division

also hugely influential too. And has a great goth joke about the lead singer. "Who's gother than thou? Ian Curtis is the gothest one of all, for he actually committed suicide, and right before imminent stardom!"

well, you gotta have a sense of humor at some point, http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Well, This past summer my girlfriend of 2.5 years and I split up... I was depressed as hell 'till I started to pull my self out of it. Depression set itself upon me for about three months, till I found a band called Opeth. Man they have some sad, dark tunes... very depressing stuff, but it helped me deal with my loss. Here's a few of my favorites with lyrics:

~Face Of Melinda~

By the turnstile beckons a damsel fair
The face of Melinda neath blackened hair
No joy would flicker in her eyes
Brooding sadness came to a rise

Words would falter to atone
Failure had passed the stepping stone
She had sworn her vows to another
This is when no-one will bother

And conceded pain in crumbling mirth
A harlot of God upon the earth
Found where she sacrificed her ways
That hollow love in her face

Still I plotted to have her back
The contentment that would fill the crack
My soul released a fluttering sigh
This day fell, the darkness nigh

I took her by the hand to say
All faith forever has been washed away
I returned for you in great dismay
Come with me, far away to stay

Endlessly gazing in nocturnal prime
She spoke of her vices and broke the rhyme
But baffled herself with the final line
My promise is made but my heart is thine

~To Bid you Farewell~

I am awaiting the sunrise
Gazing modestly through the coldest morning
Once it came you lied
Embracing us over autumn's proud treetops

I stand motionless
In a parade of falling rain
Your voice I cannot hear
As I am falling again

Devotion eludes
And in sadness I lumber
In my own ashes I am standing without a soul
She wept and whispered: "I know..."

We walked into the night
Am I to bid you farewell?

Why can't you see that I try
When every tear I shed
Is for you?

last one, I promise

~In My Time of Need~

I can't see the meaning of this life I'm leading
I try to forget you as you forgot me
This time there is nothing left for you to take, this
is goodbye

Summer is miles and miles away
And no one would ask me to stay

And I should contemplate this change
To ease the pain
And I should step out of the rain
turn away

Close to ending it all, I am drifting through the
stages
Of the rapture born within this loss
Thoughts of death inside, tear me apart from the core
of my soul

At times the dark's fading slowly
But it never sustains
Would someone watch over me
In my time of need

Those are about all of the original thoughts I can contribute, but I must say I like a lot of the songs you guys have posted, especially the ones listed by violetskye.
