CAN YOU GET VIRUSES ONLINE?!?!
A GOODFRIEND TOLD ME THAT SOME HACKERS/LAMERS ARE SENDING VIRUSES THAT CORRUPT/DELETE FILES.
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ALL ABOUT!?!

HERE ARE THE DETAILS:
1)ITEMS ARE DROPPED ON THE "LOBBY".
2)WHEN THE ITEM IS PICKED UP, YOUR FILE MAY BE AFFECTED EITHER BY DELETION OR
CORRUPTION.

-I'VE ALSO HEARD THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT
CAN KILL OTHERS WHILE IN THE LOBBY!-

FIRST PKING/THIEVING NOW, VIRUSES???
*sigh*.....
CAN ANYONE SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS,
OR AM I JUST A REALLY GULLIBLE S.O.B.?

(This is not a joke. I'm VERY serious about this topic.)

Yes, i've heard about this. It happened quite sometime ago. From what i know (correct me if im wrong), lobby pking and item dropping is done through the use of gameshark. Also, as a side effect, this could cause data corruptions (i haven't confirmed this yet) to whoever pick an item in lobby or is pked there. This is not a virus that is spreading, just a deadly glitch. Fortunately, the trend is dying down. I haven't seen any magic casting in lobby lately.

a good friend of mine got corrupted. doesnt know how. he just kept dying..nothing he could do....it would take him to the hospital, then he'd die, and theis continues. looks like we might have an era of viruses.

Yah Yah me!!
Here's the story:
I was in a Vhard game with some guy, playing in mines. he was in town and I was fighting off some gillchics as my lvl 75 RAmar Blaine. Suddenly, I drop dead. Nothing that I saw happened to cause this. When I hit return to Pioneer 2, I reapeared in the medical center, then dying imediatly. My health showd 0/0. I turned off DC. When I logged back on, I died in the lobby imediatly!! I tried offline, but no use. I couldn't even bring up the menu. Oh well, sh*t happens...
I deleted the file and made a new character.

Pheh, virus... *rolls eyes*
Okay, now where would the virus be stored?
A virus can only be a virus if it's in a place where it'll be executed.
DC's internal memory? Nope, nothing's executed there, just some info stored.
VMU? Just files again, w/ the exeception of a VMU game w/ a virus it in. That could technically corrupt saves, but it wouldn't affect playing PSO.
The actual servers themselves? Bleh, then odds are the whole ship would crash and wouldn't be available to connect to it again until Sega removes the virus...

Okay, now how would the virus even be made? Though gameshark? Please...the gameshark for DC creates a lil memory-resident program in the ram that searches for the offsets you specified in the code selection list and modifies their value. You can't create code (when I say that, I mean programming, not cheats) with it...

You were Player Killed Over and Over Again by someone in the game.

This has happened to me and he just said it was for fun.

I could only turn off the game because everytime I went to the Medic two seconds later, he would kill me again and everybody in the room aswell.

That really pissed me off !!! because I lost all my items.

The thing that is really messed up is that all he has to do, is be inside the same game as you, and he can kill you without even being near you. Just highlights your name and does an anti-heal on you.

Lmao whoever said they weren't virus's is totally correct. Gameshark just adjusts game memory to do beyond-normal functions (IE: Godmode).

Do the smart thing and play private games if you're going to run around in your best stuff. Otherwise, you'll probably gunna be losing it - often.

And zanza, every god damn post you make, you type in capitals. TURN THEM OFF.

No there aren't any viruses. It was a rumor that got started by MAXIMINA, who never intended to do anything of the sort, as a joke to someone. For viruses to spread it would most likely have to be an inside job. That's the only way I can think it might even have a chance of being possible. Why would someone make viruses when they have no way to protect themselves from it?

Heh, Omege12, that was me who was in the game with you. That was pretty freaky stuff, I would revive you and you would immediately die again. It also sucks that you had to delete a level 75 character, but well, shit like that happens in this game...we can only wait for version 2...

Um, by the way, do you want your DB Saber and 7177 meseta back? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_wink.gif

It's not a virus. However there are various ways people can intentionaly corrupt your character data.

I'm not familiar with the specifics of Pk'ing. But apparently there are gameshark functions which allow people to drop items and even in some cases, cast spells in the lobby of a PSO server.

If you pick up an item in hte lobby, your character will sometimes get botted out of the server, and get corrupted. Likewise, if someone casts and spell which effects you (ie: anti, reseta, shifta, deband), while you are in the lobby, the same thing may happen.

Playing in password protected games is a good way to stay away from Pk'ers, but there isn't much you can do about the loby exploits.

Hopefully Sega will catch wind of this soon, and find a way to stop it.

There is no way to catch a virus in PSO. It might be possible to some how make some corrupt their data. Untill It happens to me or someone I know, I won't belive it.

I think I can clear up some things here. First of all, unless you yourself have the god/equip gameshark code enabled, you will NEVER be hit by a spell or even SEE an item in the lobby.

However, your problem of having 0 HP, here is my question:

Did you have a God/HP equipped? Because, just like the hacked Priest/Mind -- that took away your Mind Stat by over 8000, (which left you with 0 TP), it sounds like you had a hacked God/HP-- equipped, which brought your HP to 0. Thus, whenever you try to go anywhere, you immediately die.

In a way, the God/HP-- is like a virus, as your pretty much screwed unless it happens to be in the first slot of your item list and u own a GameShark/Xploder.

These are just my thoughts. As to whether or not this is true for you, I don't know.

Thank you Julap. I'm glad to see some people other than myself pay attention...
As Julap stated, lobby techniques are dead. The trend never died down, Sega just stopped it from affecting others. I figured if two people had the god equip code on, they could see each other do it, and apparently, I was right.
So, pay attention. Lobby echniques and such were killed off weeks ago, and thus, you can't be corrupted by picking up items in the lobby or getting hit by a technique.
P.S Before it was patched, I saw meseta on the ground and I couldn't target it to pick it up, so I really don't know how you could ever pick the stuff up....

I have two backups of my Bela on my 4X memory unit. And my main one is on a VMU so in case something happens. I'm paranoid. I don't cheat using them either though. I would if everyone online wasn't all nazi's about duping... hehe.

Omege, I do remember you telling me last night something about deleting your char.

You think maybe it was something like BSOD; not BSOB itself but something like it. I remember something happening to me a while back. The whole game froze; I could move, I couldn't even reset, the whole screen was still. The next thing I did was turn the power off. I went back, but offline, and I found all my things were gone, except my equipped items; even my bank items. I went back online to see what happened, but I never found an answer. A few days after that day, when I played again. I went offline and I found all my items that were in my bank were back. So I didn't lose too much, 'cept some certain items (-mates, mesetas).

Once I was playing in the ruins, I had just leveled up, and went to town to sell some rares. I sold them, then went down my friends telepipe. As soon as I took 3 steps, my screen blinked, then went black. Then went to the screen you see when you turn on your Dreamcast without a disc in it.

This is normal, since I have a US copy of PSO, and a Japanese Dreamcast. So I popped my Utopia bootdisc in, and then swaped in PSO.

I started an offline game. Though it never saved, the level I had raised, was still there. All my items, and meseta were gone, except those I had equipped, and those that were in the bank.

Damn strange if you ask me.
