View Full Version : Where are all the girl players on PSO?

I was just curious lately about the seeming lack of girl players on PSO? How come? While there are many girl characters, I am surprised that so often they are males IRL. I know the reasons why male players make female characters, but I am just so curious why there seem to be so few female players overall. Maybe online video games do not appeal to females or maybe they are just busy doing other things (like shopping) in life. (Takes a look in her closet and thinks maybe she should put the controller down and get busy at TJ Maxx...lol).

Or maybe we don't play online because of all the harassment we get from the hormonal male players.

Yeah, considering how most girls get treated by idiots online in most games, I would'nt go around letting everyone know either.

It's abit pathetic, but thats how it is, sadly.

I always wondered why people think other choose their character based on their oun sex?

Honesly, my first character was female.

oh and i love it when people expect a female character to have a male name if a guy is using it. i have experienced it first hand, and i think its stupid.

i try to stray from the a/l/s thing and wait untill the other person tells me or untill i have known the person long enough.

but alas, the young desperate boys will always be around...

Well, I'm a girl, and I play almost exclusively online. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif I find online games to be much more exciting than offline games, even if more than half the people on them are immature little brats. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif I've played a few other games online (Day of Defeat, Age of Kings, and Dungeon Siege come to mind) in addition to PSO. In PSO, AoK, and DS I basically just play(ed) with friends, but I can't recall even one instance in any game, open or not, of getting harassment because I was a girl. I dunno, maybe I'm just lucky. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif Oh, and I detest shopping.

Cough, I see nothing wrong using Girl Characters a Male, or vice e versa. We just use what ever character we want! (In honesty though, i chose a Foneweal because i wanted to be cute) AND it also repersents amazing acting ability when people do ask if your a girl irl and all...

Ooh hoo! I love to screw with people like that!

*stupid refresh!*

I forgot what the ad was, I think it was the server ones saying "We hate cheaters!"

Anyway, I choose mostly female characters since their technique stats are better then the males. In my opinion, HUnewearl > RAmarl > HUmar > RAmar. I hate rangers, so that leaves HUnewearl and HUmar, and I have two HUnewearls and one HUmar.

Plus one FOnewearl and one FOmar that I'm starting to raise. Its 3:2 right now for sexes of my characters, females in the lead.

I've only met a handful of females players on PSOGC, and even less on PSOX. The only female players I've found on PSOX use male characters and a voice mask because of how all the idiots kids hit on them all day.

Hmmm how did this get turned around on me, Illi? Anyways, I was just curious originally because I had heard that very few women play video games in general and was curious about how few women/girls play this game. But then the topic spun to harrassment and other such things. I really have not been harassed too much on this game I don't think. And overall I have not really disguised my gender when playing. I think it is all about approach and handling life. You either handle it or find ways to avoid it if you do not think you can. I guess you can be selective about who you give your card to.. and if they turn out to be obnoxious in mails then you can block or just ignore them. Eventually people will stop mailing you if you ignore it. I guess I have a habit of playing with people who have established themselves as friends and appropriate ones at that so the harassment issue is not one that I have had to contend with lately.

Hm, to the person who said girls love the attention.
Er. Well, some do, some don't. Just like any normal human being, each girl is different. Heh. Most video playing girls however, I found out, not to like the attention too much. It's hard to concntrate on playing (or doing anything really) when you're being asked about a million personal things all the time.

I've found it quite the opposite. In real life AND pso. Women just love attention. And men love giving it to them, just human nature.

And about the gay guy. Honestly, why do you even need to tell anyone? It's an online game. "Don't ask, don't tell" should be the policy. It seems to me you just wanted some attention also. Obviously most people are going to be disgusted and turned off by you telling them that. Use some common sense.

Most perverted guys on PSO feel threatened by me. I don't quite know why that is*, but it's quite convenient.

*-this is a lie

I suppose they just have trouble dealing with the fact that not all female players are submissive or dependant. A strong female presence online, one who is not only ready to brutally turn down their pickup lines but make them regret ever opening their mouths in the first place, just doesn't sit right with the usual chauvinistic PSO crowd. In lieu of this, I'm mostly exempt from all the garbage these kids spew at female players. ... Plus, if they knew my age, they'd back off anyway. Muahahah.

Oh, and about the attention, that really depends on the circumstances. The type of attention I would get on PSO is usually completely lacking in wit, extremely sexist and piggish, and tends to come from people five or more years my junior. It's not flattering, it's just insulting. Plus, I hate being called "beautiful" on this game. These people have no idea what I actually look like, so they likewise have no business saying I'm "beautiful". Only people who have actually seen what I look like, or know me, can use that term. Otherwise it lacks any real meaning.

I guess what I mean to say is, attention is nice, but not when it's empty. Or insulting. ... Plus, I'm sort of in love right now, so attention of any kind outside of a friendship context is generally going to be unwelcome.

Whoa whoa whoa. Calm down buddy. Yes, I think homesexuality is a deviant lifestyle. But yet, I've never attacked anybody for it. And no, I don't harass females online. In fact, I don't even play online. So come with facts first son.

You just don't get it do you? Most of the world is not accepting of your lifestyle. And for you to throw it in their face, what do you honestly expect to happen?

I'd have no problem playing with a gay guy/girl online, as long as they kept it to theirselves. Do I "feel threatened"? LOL, hardly.

You need a reality check brother. People don't play pso online to have morals preached to them. They play to have fun, to get away from real life. There is absolutely NO point in specifying your religion/color/sexual preference. And if you do, you have to expect some people may be turned off by it.

That's why I said you're just looking for attention. You know claiming to be gay will get it. And here's some advice: don't preach your morals to me.

It's just boring after seeing males in abundance in game after game after game. I enjoy seeing females educate retarded immature boys both in games, and in real life. Plus it's an RPG of sorts, isn't it?

I think in any online game, not just rpg's, announcing you're female is like coating yourself in honey, and laying down next to an anthill. >.<

But, getting free items (in RO), because someone thinks you'll be attracted to them for it, is a form of satisfaction with no equal. >.>

Then again, I play strictly offline (no 'net for GC yet), so I dunno if all this counts.

I don't know, i've only met a couple of female players online on PSO. One of them had managed to wrap a few male players around their little finger (these guys were complete morons to be honest, but she was REALLY acting up on it), and the other player was really down to earth and friendly. She is on my friends list and we play together frequently online now. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

My wife plays online all the time, and although I often play with her, I don't always. She doesn't get that sort of treatment, but it's pretty obvious by her attitude that she's not a teenager. All of our friends are very nice and considerate to her.

And she doesn't take rares from anyone because she's legit...NOT to bring that into the discussion at all.

BTW, we used to play with a gay guy and he was an excellent player and a nice guy. We'll play with anyone who's nice and plays the game with a little consideration. (Doesn't hog exp, grab all the items, etc.)

Then he found out I was a guy and he was just, "AAAAHHH!! I WAS CHECKING OUT A GUY'S CHARACTERS!!! AAAAHHH!!!"

When he made the statement that guys should only make male characters and girls should only make female characters, I promptly informed him, "Well, I've got one of each class. So there."

Also, about the whole "people don't play with gay people" thing...

I'm betting most of you have played with tb-309 v.201 (or something like that...). For those who couldn't get the painfully obvious fact into their head, she's a lez. HOWEVER, she is one of the best RAcaseals in the game. I play with her all the time. She even revealed herself to be a lez in front of many other people, and she was still treated with respect.

In fact, I've NEVER seen anyone leave because tb's a lez. I think it's because she's so good at the game that no one cares.

In short, don't go around booting out gay people from your games if they're high level...they might just be really good at the game, and might just help you get that rare you need. (tb has yellowboze as her section id, so she's helping me find an Ancient Saber)

But my question is... is it relevant? Does it matter? And does it matter on PSO? I might find it interesting to know where people might be from and ages (just in case I swear, lol)but I really don't care about anyone's sexual preference when I'm playing PSO. Just play... there is nothing more to this really than a video game with online interaction. It's not cool to fool with some dude at 4AM who thinks he's hitting on a sweet girl from California.

It usually results in very embarrassing situations...

And it is cool for that 'some dude' to assume the player of a female character is a 'sweet girl from California'?
That dude should get himself a life! I choose my chars based on potential and how it fits my personal playing style. Only 2 of my 10 chars are male. 1 of'em even doesn't fit the 'potential' thing. (He's a HUmar I made for storage. I found his ID was one I didn't have so I started working on him. Now he's too high up for me to start him over in a more favorable class. So I play him when I'm up for the challenge of a style that doesn't fit me)
I NEVER make assumptions about a player by the character they play, not even when they display 'obvious gender-specific' behavior. If the gender issue comes up I am honest about mine without expecting the other to do the same.
I think I know some girls and women (calling Coolest-Mum a girl is an insult!) on PSO. And although I don't know anything about most people I play with (just don't care...) I do get the impression that they are in the minority. But I understand that is normal in the world of video games. So, guess the few of'em are there, and if you're nice in the game they'll let you know and play with you as friend or something...

Uhhh, I lost the line of my post there. Think I'll leave it at this...

Ugh... I can't sleep... don't wanna play... but as far as the posts go... it has been interesting... reading these, though, makes me wanna say that I have no issues personally with whether Christov (sorry about the name if I messed it up... too lazy to scroll right about now) is gay or any other player for that matter. Play, have fun, level characters, get cool weapons, dupe, be legit, whatever... but most importantly... be nice, have manners, and get on with it.

I agree rhymmney but the prob is you have too many guys on this game who desparately want to play with girls.. so you have this problem of guys hitting on hunewearls who are actually guys etc, etc.. In a perfect Pso world the girls wouldnt have to be worried about giving out their guild cards with the thoughts this person could be a possible problem.. Yes of course there is the block sender option online ... but a lot of the times the actions of the person dont warrant a all out complete boycott of the person.. They just mail you ask you questions when ur in the middle of dark falz.. continuously keep trying to hold your attention when ur trying to play.. This can be annoying to females who would rather play the game than to get to know everyone she meets online..

People might not realize it, but the ratio between male/female videogame players is very high. Like every 60 guys you get, you have 1 girl. This might not be true for PSO, but in all games together.

My GF and I run our clan on PSOX and we have been playing pso for sometime. Hell the first real gift I gave her was a dreamcast and a copy of PSO ver2.

OMG...

I can't believe people do that......er, kids do that...and desperate people. But why do people do that? It's sad.
I once was playing CS and people were getting all over this person, who might've been a guy. I mean, the game loses its meaning when no one is playing the damn game.

I think in order to prevent events such as these, everyone must...GROW UP. There, my opinion. I mean, I guess its ok to give extra priveleges to them (if they want to give them an item, so be it, they are just losing something they can have), but harassment is a No-No.
