I'm sure this should be obvious to me after a little while, but I still don't understand the importance of the stars in the descriptions of various equipment. What do they indicate?

hm, let's put it this way..
more stars usually mean the item is rarer/better..

Basicly the level of the item. Like Dhylec said, the more stars an item has, the better quaility and rarity it has, but not always.

Yeah, and I'm tired of 9 stars.

As you progress through the game the stars on the items you find will increase, although the rarity doesn't until you get to the 10-11 star items. And still it depends on the enemy who drops it.

I think he was referring to SpyroDi's comment about the guilty light.
