View Full Version : Would there be any way to add an Auto-Lock?

Noticed the newly bumped way old threads in the Ep 3 forum. Erupt, would it be very difficult to add a script that will auto-lock a topic, after say, 30 days of inactivity? That way the thread could still be used for informational purposes on occasion, but the chances of it popping up again after it's current usefullness has died will be nil.

Likely asking something that has been asked before, but it wouldn't appear to be that difficult to do, and may just not have been thought of before. Meh.

Threads get locked if bumped from the 3+ pages ...
2 week timer ?

This would screw over fanworks. People have one huge thread for their fics, that they bump when they post a new chapter. What happens if they don't get a chapter out for a month due to *insert reason here*, they bump their thread with the new chapter, it's locked, and they have to make a new thread? Then that gets locked for being a repeat... No.

Um, that COULD be a problem in Fanworks, but then again, the author could notice the auto-lock and maybe PM a mod to get it unlocked? Or is that not possible...?

Or, instead of having tons of locked threads, move them to another set of boards (archived messages) that cannot be replied to.

Because having threads with tons of locks doesn't look too appealing to me.

Yes, but if you're going back 3 months of threads, that kind of thing would then be expected. 3 months old on most of these boards is a few pages back... Cept for maybe the Ep 3 Battle Boards.

There is already a separator for each board with it's own identifiers (IE, no post count in FKL, none over 5 in Lounge), so it likely wouldn't be hard for this new script to see the identifier for Fanworks and leave it alone, methinks.

Perphaps auto lock only in specified forums? Such as Generals, M/Q/I/SI D, Card Discussion, Off Topic, Site Related, FKs, rants and lounge?

In fanworks, trade, and possibly competition and tech forums, the auto lock could disrupt the process.

But also the coding would probably be odd, what with the current date requiring changes based on time zones in relation to server time and double posts, Etc.

Well, it doesn't have to be precise, 3 months in those forums is a bit long anyway, so even if it locked it 2 months, 29 days, and an hour instead of the full 3 (or 2, may work as well), it really wouldn't make a difference. The script would take whatever the current time is on the host it's using and do it's work that way. And after a first runthrough, it wouldn't even take long for a daily 24:00 run.
