Can anyone please explain why I keep seeing the letter "w" when I play on jp ships? What does it mean?

It means "look, a dirty American gaijin!"

Just kidding.
It's basically their equivalent to "lol".

Nevermind, it was explained earlier and I didn't read the fine print.

Actually, I believe wara literally translates as smile, as in the act of smiling. That's why a lot of their smiley faces will use a little w as the mouth. ^w^

Laugh = warau
Smile = nikoniko

W is the same as 'lol'.

Are you sure? Set your game to japanese language and try those out. Nikoniko does nothing, but wara will make a variety of smiley faces. Niko does make a few smilies, though.

Yes I'm sure, I speak some Japanese and I checked my dictionary. Besides, the word select and what not are not always acuratly translated between different languages.

On that note, you know those weird word selects you get in cmode? A friend of mine said that people on the Japanese ships get really upset if you say the one, "Stick a fork in me, I'm done!" http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I am not too sure about just "w" because when I chat to my japanese friends on aim they tend to do "ww" instead of "w". But I guess that just means laugh laugh?

"gaijin" means foreigner, according to a dictionary I use, at least, which seems correct.
