View Full Version : Opening ports on routers

AUTO_
Mar 1, 2004, 08:17 PM
Well...I'm down to my last thread. I just can't get PSO to connect to the game server, and this is kind of my last hail mary all-or-nothing attempt.

Sega told me to open up ports:

9000

and

10,000

How do I do this? I don't really wanna mess with my router to much...last time I disabled our DSL (on everything) for like 2 weeks.

BTW: How can I check for firewall information on windows XP?

In advance: Thankya

1. What brand and model number is the router?
2. Have you tried accessing the web based utility (usually 192.168.1.100)
3. Did you try looking on the manufacturers website to see how to do it? (All manufacturers will have a manual that you can download to look at. Most will be in .pdf format)
4. Have you tried calling the manufacturers tech support number to see if they can walk you through (its easy and doesn't take long.)
5. Did you try looking through the routers application software?

It's a Westell router and they have been little to no help on the matter.

I can't understand why I can connect through the website but not to the game. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_confused.gif

Ok, take this LINK (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/bellsouth/3.14+Westell+Info#7074) and follow SECTIONS 1, 2 and 3. After that you should be good to go. You will probably want to skip steps 4, 5 and 6 since they pertain to specific game settings.

Sorry I forgot your other question. To check the Firewall on XP, go to START and right click on MY NETWORK PLACES and select PROPERTIES. You should see a connection labeled LOCAL AREA CONNECTION. Right click on that and select PROPERTIES, then click on the ADVANCED tab. It will be right there. If its checked the firewall is on, if not its off.

Thanks Violet...I'll give that a try. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

EDIT: PSO isn't under the listed service names.

So..?

yeah thats why i said skip those steps and go to like step 8 which covers manually openning a port.

So after I open up ports 9000 and 10000 on my router will that harm my computer's connections in any way?

EDIT: Sorry Violet just a few more questions.

1) What should Global Port(s) be set to? What is it?

2) How do I assign these to my Gamecube? I don't see it listed under the selectable choices.

Violet I should also add that:

-My Gamecube is hooked up through my router

but...

-I use the same cable for my laptop as I use for the GC, and they both go in the same port slot.

(Not sure if that matters)

Thanks again.

No, it won't harm your computer at all.

EDIT: Sorry Violet just a few more questions.

1) What should Global Port(s) be set to? What is it?

When I did some packet analysis of my PSO connection I saw that the ports ranged from 9000 to 9007. So I would use a range of at least 20. Meaning that you would enter for your "GLOBAL PORT RANGE" windows 1 and 20. That will allow ports 9000-9020 to be open for playing. Then do the same for 10000, ie. enter 1 and 20 for your "GLOBAL PORT RANGE" windows which will allow ports 10000-10020 to be accessible.

After rereading my post, I thought I might not have been clear. You want to do 2 separate port opennings. One for 9000 and one for 10000. Make sure to use a Global Port Range of 1 to 20 on both of them.

2) How do I assign these to my Gamecube? I don't see it listed under the selectable choices.

You don't need to do anything special to assign it to your GC but under Service Name I would enter GAMECUBE just so you know what it is for.

Thanks for your continuous help http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_yes.gif

So you're saying I don't have to enable them to any system...so long as they're under the list of service names?

Can I set my GC's network settings all to automatic and the router should detect my TCP 9000 and 10000 now right?

Does it list the Gamecube as a HOST DEVICE?

Yeah, set everything back to automatic on the Network Options for PSO. If all goes well, you should be able to log onto the Sega servers and actually play http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

No it doesn't have the gamecube as a detected device.

It detects my laptop and my dads computer, though.

try turning the GC on first then look to see if its listed.

...and I must have to enable them/set them to my GC...because I tried connecting without them enabled and I got the same 30second "finding DNS server" screen.

EDIT: GC was on when I went back and it still didn't detect my GC...

I've never had to deal with this on my linksys router so I have no idea if this will work but I'll mention it anyway.

I'm wondering if you can trick it into openning those ports for the GC by actually openning the ports for one of the devices that are listed (like your pc) and then after its associated with that device and enabled, try switching the cables so that your GC goes into the port where the pc was connected and connect the PC to the other port where the GC was connected. It may be that it simply opens the ports for that specific cable port and by switching them around, the ports will still be open and allow your GC access to them. Worth a try http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Heh..I basically did that right before your post (assigned the GC info to my laptop)...I'll let you know if it works.

and with my luck...

AUTO_

Tried it and it didn't work.

Any other ideas?

Problem:

I can access the website from the game, but the game server can't be reached. The "finding DNS server" page is up for about 30 seconds and then I get either a 101 or a 102 error.

it might be that the cable port knows that the GC is not your laptop. The only other thing I can think of is to try using ICS (internet connection sharing.) That way as long as the ports are open for your pc, your GC will be able to access them also.

AUTO_

ICS eh? I'll give it a shot.

Thanks

The only other thing I can think of to try is to call your ISP and register the MAC address of your BBA. It is very possible that their DHCP server isn't recognizing your BBA and therefore not assigning it an IP, which may be the reason it doesn't show up in the Host Device window.

I'm pretty tired (been sick for a few days http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif lol) so hopefully all that made sense. The MAC is located on the back of the BBA on a little white sticker and should start with 000. (its a 12 digit alphanumeric MAC)

My ISP said registering a MAC is free--but I have to call during regular business hours to activate one.

I'll let you know how that goes tomorrow.

I'd think the ISP wouldn't be able to detect which MAC was actually accessing there server if he's using a router, Plus if his PC can connect and his GC is using the router, why would his GC MAC matter at all?

I agree, however slick, if you look through the entire thread you will see that he already tried pretty much everything else. This was the only other thing I could think of. If you have a better solution or a better idea of whats wrong, by all means please inform the rest of us, we would love to hear it.

I'm not familiar with the Westell modem/router but assuming it works primarily like any other modem/router, you would be correct in thinking that the MAC for the BBA would not matter because the router is recognized and should be assigning an IP to the GC BBA. However, that hasn't been the case and he still is not able to play online. He mentioned in another thread that he uses PPPOA which may in and of itself be the problem. PPPOA is a b*tch to use with many online games because of the way it handles packets.

BTW you are wrong about the ISP not knowing which MAC accesses the server. On ANY DHCP server, the MAC must be recognized.

AUTO_

I called my ISP and they said my MAC adress should be active in about 4 hours (not sure why so long but..).

I hope this works before I get EPIII tonight...I'm running out of ideas.

AUTO_
Mar 4, 2004, 12:56 AM
I got EpIII today and I got the same error I had with Ep1&2 (times out during the "Finding DNS page").

I'm assuming my MAC adress is registered...but it didn't seem to help.

Violet please dude...do you have any other ideas?

My router MUST be compatible if I can connect to the website..but something in my settings must be wrong if I can't get on the PSO servers.

Can you think of anything? Any tests I could run or possibly look at some settings I overlooked on my PC?

Seriously dude I'm looking for anything to make this work...it's confused me to the point of depression http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

thanks again

Well, since we've tried so many different things with no luck, I would say that we move on to ICS. I use it occasionally when I'm grabbing packet info and it works beautifully. If there is a Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack, Comp USA etc nearby, go pick up a cheap crossover cable (keep the receipt in case you need to return it for any reason.)

Anyway, ICS should work with no problems (no guarantees of course) but even most AOL users can at least use ICS so our chances are very high that it will work just fine. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Just a few numbers takes me to my router's configuration setup.

And I should add:

-My ISP DID put up my GC's BBA MAC number...and my dad's computer can detect it! (through the router).

I enabled the GC settings

TCP ports 9000 and 1000 with GPR set at 1-20

...and it still didn't connect.

Still, it's good news that my router actually recognizes my GC now (IF ONLY I COULD MAKE IT CONNECT).

I'm gonna try a power cycle and get back to you on the results...if this doesn't work I guess ISC? is the only option left.

OH!!

I almost forgot:

On my router--the only enabled port isn't set to PPPOA OR PPPOE ...

It's set to bridge....what is bridge for? What settings on my GC should I use if it's set to bridge?

Thanks again.

VioletSkye

a bridge connects LAN connects together that use the same protocol (ie. ethernet.) There isn't anything in the Network setup for GC that has to do with a bridge so that should be ok. the fact that the router now recognizes the GC is a huge step forward. Now I'm thinking its a matter of tweaking a few settings.

I use an alcatel speedtouch5 combined modem and router, to get to its configuration screen i have to type in http://10.0.0.138 into the web browser, although this only brings up a basic configuration setup and i can not make any adjustments to ports or the firewall.

the basic set up is this:

Region: UK

Provider: All

Service Name: Dynamic Address

Service Description: PPPoA, UK Settings, NAPT, DHCP, DNS

As for the firewall, if i want to change anyhting i have to use telnet and that looks like this:
