Anyone know why hearts appear whenever I near near another character while both wearing the purple ring? Does it do it with the other rings as well¿

That's the effect of the Purple Rings cause.

That is to show that the Ring is workin. That you are gettin your Def boost, or that particular boost that the Ring you have equipped is boostin.
