Do npc's effect your chances of getting rares if they attack the enemies? And do they have the ability to get rares to drop when they kill an enemy?

Why can't an enemy drop a rare when a NPC kills it? I would think that the game would treat the kill the same no matter who does it.

The answer is no. You only have to make sure you keep the NPC alive.
