It means that for whatever reason, when they tried loading up their game, the character data had an error and simply wouldn't load. So therefore, the person had to restart. Doesn't happen often, even less so in Ep 3, but it does happen.

When you load up a char, that info gets stored in ram which the game uses to keep track of everything, and when you quit and exit a game the current state of your char is written back to the memory card. Same thing happens online when you enter a game and when you open a shop or bank window (since your inventory is stored only on your memory card and not loaded into ram to reduce packet size.)

Corruption occurs when those packets get interrupted (or bad data gets through) and the save state doesn't get written back to your memory card properly. The game then only has incomplete data that its trying to use. If it was interrupted during the guildcard transfer, then you can sometimes just delete the guild card file and let the GC write a new one, which means that the rest of the files should be ok. If it was the Character and/or System file that didn't get written properly back to the card, then no matter what you do, you won't be able to fix it and you will need to let the GC create new files over the top of the old ones which means you just lost everything.
