View Full Version : "Calling?"

That's what some people call it, but that carries some religious overtones which I wasn't after. I'm wondering, do you think there is something that everyone is "supposed to" or "meant" to do? Do you think it's a specific thing, or just kind of a direction?

I myself believe that everyone has a calling, except not like someone's actually calling you to do it. It's as if there's one path your life could take that's level instead of uphill like the rest. I believe that it's an easy thing to miss, and that once you do, you can't go back to it. And that sometimes, circumstances simply prevent (or make you think they prevent) you from following it.

I'll post more of my thoughts after I marshal them some more. What are yours?

You mean like purpose, destiny and all that fun stuff? I think I have one. Maybe, but if I did know, would I know. And if could know, should I know?

If by "calling" you mean a purpose, then everyone's purpose is to live, then die.

If, by "calling," you mean something someone is compelled to do or something one has a talent for, then yeah, everyone has one of those, whether thaey have stumbled across it or not.

My calling is to learn and analyze. As strange as it may sound, I have an insatiable lust for it. I'm always striving to learn new things, to learn how things work, to learn how to use things, to learn anything I can, and to analyze and ponder every single tidbit of information I can possibly gather. Sometimes I just spend hours just thinking to myself about something, figuring out whatever it may be or what it may apply to, and make my own theories if necessary, always looking at whatever angle I can to absorb as much information as possible.

Yeah, I am a geekishly eccentric knowledge-monger.

Basically, the "calling" doesn't appear all of a sudden(like if you here a voice in your head that says "SAVE FRANCE!") Usually, it's little things such as strangers, some pictures(maybe) and friends and realitives(sp). Those little things add up to one big thing, but you may not realize it.

I don't think everyone has a calling. How do you explain dirtbags that do nothing but live off welfare and spend whatever cash they get on Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and cigarettes?

Most people do have a calling including everyone here from as far as I can tell. But there are alot of shitbags in the world who are content to be absolutely nothing in this world. They're worthless.

Even terrorists have a calling, unfortunately it is one of evil.

Wrong. There is good and evil. Based on this, people create their own points of view.

That, my friend, is the theory of Ying & Yang. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smilejap.gif

Just because people sit on their asses and don't do anything doesn't mean they don't have a calling. While it's not much of an existance to just let the days pass you by and live off such meagerness, some people have to, and others are content to, so oh well.

I beleive everyone has something they are very good at, which comes quite natural, almost to the extent that they might not even realise they have the ability, or see it as anything special, so they don't take advantage of it.

Hell if I know what my calling is, so I'll just be the company Doer of Practically Anything until then.

Incorrect, depending on interpretation. The philosphy of Yin and Yang also reveals that Yin to the extreme becomes Yang, and Yang to the extreme becomes Yin. One cannot exist without the other and the other cannot exist without the one, yet they are essentially one in the same being. Thus, in an abstract point of veiw, there is no good or evil, just an object that is open to interpretation by one's more direct perspective on abstract life.

Something from the bible I heard a while back - If you are kind to your friends and family, what credit is that to you? Even sinners sympathize with sinners.

Go ahead, ponder good and evil.
"I try to love everyone as best I can" - Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird

Not sure why I put all that here, but seems like good food for thought with regard to the good and evil conversation arising.

Lets not twist the discussion away from what it is supposed to be. The topic isn't about good and evil.

I believe there is a calling to everyone's life.
Many times I thought I have found it, only to figure out that really wasn't it.

I think some people are lucky to have found it early, and some people (like myself) is just hopelessly perplex and lost in the maze we call living.

Or something.
