PSP is trash for anything serious. Really. It just does not have the features or the ability of Photoshop. There's a reason PSP is $100 and PS is $600, and it's not entirely because Adobe -can- charge $600. PSP does indeed have a MUCH better user interface. Photoshop's is cluttered and leaves little room for your actual work. However, it's features make up for it.

Were I to actually pay for either, I'd pay for Photoshop first. >_>;

Start up a quick Angelfire account to host your pic. Just make sure to do an actual INDEX.HTML page that says something like coming soon or under contruction, so that they don't close it down. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Another great alternative is to use any free webspace your ISP provides. Most of the time that web space has unlimited bandwidth so you don't have to worry about traffic allowances. Since I've always had web spce available to use, I've never had to use those free pic hosting services so unfortunately I can't recommend any, but I'm sure other members could name some good ones to use. You could also do a search for free pic hosting.

I did come across this site Free Picture Hosting (http://www.freepichosting.com/).

Navi is teh ebil heretic?! PS 7's brush engine is like a prickly sea urchin: I just can't get comfortable with it. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif I've seen some excellent usage of the new texture options, but all those artists were already fabulously talented and creative without the use of fancy brushes. Personally, I prefer to keep it simple as far as brushes go; a plain ol' 50% opacity circular airbrush tool the best for my painting method. Plus, the brush editor window takes up even more space! Rawr!
I've heard from some that the new brush engine simulates real media better, but, you know what? Wouldn't simpler tools be more true to life and allow for easier adaptation from digital to traditional media?
There are, of course, some things I like about PS 7. The option of fitting text to a particular shape is a nice feature which I was forced to accomplish previously in Illustrator (which, unfortunately, I am not particularly fond of). The new layer blending options are fun, although of limited use to me. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif The pattern generator is also cool but nothing I couldn't do as easily with PS 6. I'll admit I haven't conducted an exhaustive investigation of PS 7's capabilities, but I have not yet found any reason to abandon my preciousssss.

I dunno. I am always the odd one out.
Maybe cuz right after Pshop 4 I jumped to 7 and then I didn't have anything to compare. Besides, I always just use 2 brushes to draw anyway. So, it really didn't affect me that much. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

That said, I don't like the default XP blue bar. That looks really awful as well. Style XP, Window Blinds, Star skin or any other skinning tool is a requirement. I use Style XP cuz it uses next to nothing in regards to system resources (which is more than I can say for some of the desktop images I've seen lol. People need to learn how to shut down unnecessary programs running in the background.) The silver XP bar isn't too bad, but that blue is just nasty (sorry AquaFlare lol) http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I guarantee you my windows runs as stable and fast (if not faster than any machine on this site http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif) without that godawful classic look. Go back through the post and look at my desktop. I don't have any butterflies anywhere. I've been using Windows since version 3, and having worked for Microsoft as a code monkey, I think I know how to run a stable machine http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

BTW the classic view is hardly hardcore lol. Wanna look hardcore, run Linux and do your own programming for that. Thats far more "hardcore" than running Win XP classic view http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

BTW, speaking of hardcore, how can you say it looks more hardcore considering you have all kinds of garbage running in the background that should be turned off. Your startup tray looks like a 7 course meal lol (which btw eats up and wastes system resources.) You don't need WinMX to load at startup, nor do you need the Blue (looks like EA) icon. There were a few others that could be turned off as well and don't need to run at system startup. You can still use the programs whenever you want, but by having them load at startup, it takes longer for you machine to fully boot and it loads all kinds of drivers that aren't needed unless you want to use the program.

XP is hellaciously stable for Windows so far, but maybe that's because my mother insisted on putting the computer in the Dining Room(No, I don't know either) and insists on turning it off if it's not in use for even an hour.

It's nice how programs crashing now only take themselves down instead of the entire system.

I did manage to crash it once, though. Dunno how. Probably the same way I crashed Solitaire once. >_>;

And yes, classic is hideous too. But less hideous.

I like OSX and the KDE interface. So much nicer looking than anything Windoze pulls. But I don't own a Mac, and I lack the technical skills/parental approval to fsck with the hells of trying to dual-boot a computer. I don't count the 266 Compaq in my room as a real computer, it can barely run Redhat 7.2 and lacks a NIC. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

The reason you're looking at a shitty setup is because it's my dad's computer, which hasn't been formatted in 3 years. My good and stable computer isn't connected to the internet.

I run WinMX because I download stuff. I start up my compy, start up WinMX, and go look for the files I want. Because queues exist, I must minimize it and let the computer sit around for a while until my file's complete.

The blue icon reads EN (I think that's the one you're talking about) This simply displays my keyboard language, since I regularly switch between French and English.

I happen to have lots of useless drivers and otehr shit that loads up, but blame my father on that. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif He didn't know much about computers, and thus when I took possession of it, it was in a sorry state to begin with. Because I can't find the backup CDs and because the current computer config we've got at home, I'm waiting for my mom and I to move in August, at which point all the computers in the home will be linked together via network. That'll allow me to easily salvage the stuff I need on dad's computer, format said computer, and make a good, clean re-installation. But until then, I have to endure restarting roughly once every 3 days and estimating the performance of this PIII 800 at the level of a 486. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif My good computer, the 933, can usually run for a good 3 weeks on end before I actually get around to restarting it, but then again, I'm not so wild in the programs I actually use on it. No internet makes for a really more stable compy! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I once made a browser myself, back in my C# / C++ days. It had tabs and everything, but sadly they released a product called mozilla firefox that pwnz0r me. Meh, saved me the extra nights of coding.

The silver XP bar isn't too bad, but that blue is just nasty (sorry AquaFlare lol)
No skin off of my back, I never keep the same appearance. One week its blue the next its silver. As far as window blinds etc I have this kind of OCD thing about programs that have no fundamental use taking up computer space. I use to have Window Blinds, and it was very nice, but then I got on one of my cleaning habbits and never re-installed it. Ah crap....there ya go making me install it again http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_bash.gif

I guarantee you my windows runs as stable and fast (if not faster than any machine on this site ) without that godawful classic look

I'm running dual 3.2 gig P4's (Xeon) overclocked to 3.5
2 gigs of RDRAM (PC1066)
500 gigs of harddrive space (2 seagate 250 gig drives.)
Video card is a RADEON 9800 PRO 256MB
Sound card is an Audigy 2 soundblaster.
Both monitors are a 19 inch Samsung LCD active matrix flat screen.
Dual Toshiba (SD-R5002) DVD-R/-RWs

BTW I have no desire to outdo Mozilla LOL. The broswer project is just a fun little diversion to add to all the other projects I'm doing currently. I wsa thinking about creating a PSO themed browser with custom skins but whether or not I will actually have the time and/or desire to take it that far, who knows http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

As for taking up computer space, Style XP uses next to nothing. Some skinning programs are somewhat bloated and bulky, but not SXP. Also if you really don't want to waste pc space get rid of PS7 and move up to CS. I also have Studio 3d Max 6 which is an awesome program, but unless you do alot of complex 3d design/animation, both Plasma and Swift3D will accomplish the same thing and take up way less harddrive space. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

same here. Right before I quit working for the bastards at AOL I used my large check to finish off my computer. Have you made it look nice too, or is it all performance? I went crazy with blue LED's http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

VioletSkye

I had a ClearPC Full tower ATX case (completely see-through) so I used that. The only LED stuff I put in was an Antec 120-mm LED fan and a 80-mm one (both with red LED.) My system is watercooled btw. I didn't go overboard with LED strips or anything like that lol http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

AquaFlare7
May 7, 2004, 08:09 PM
heh. And from my own experience, dont get the fans that have red and blue LED's. You will not be cool for the nice pink color it blends as behind a fan blade http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

I almost bought the Xavier that came out not too long ago (new model) but decided against it and just added seperate thermal controls for better / cheaper.

EDIT: VioletSkye convinced me to get Style XP. here is my new desktop, but I cannot claim any rights to it as everything was ransacked off of this topic =/

I gave it the same name on my server as my other desktop image so you may have to refresh the page to see it.

One last thing Violet, you have to tell me where to get better skins then the main site style xp uses, it has 99% lamos

I could always go through 3D studio max and make my own version of it, but why do that when somebody just leaves theirs lying around? I do however give my props to photondrop for presenting such a nice piece http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

and just for a little credit, I had to readjust the darkness in some parts because you could see a square effect on my screen around the image, even with a black background (I am a fan of high resolution, so usually my wallpapers are set to center so they are not super deformed.)

Aqua, head over to Theme XP (http://www.themexp.org/). they have quite a few skins you can use. You can also make your own fairly easily if you don't see anything you like http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Ohhh. make sure NOT to agree to install the other garbage with your themes. There will be a license agreement that pops up on some, uncheck the selections so that only the theme is installed. That usually only appies to the actual .exe files for download. The zipped ones don't have any of that nonsense.

How do you install the new themes without having to download any additional shareware? Or do you have to download some shareware stuff? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

You can either use 3rd party software like Style XP, Window Blinds, Starskin etc., or you can manually patch the uxtheme.dll file. If you are proficient with using Windows and you don't want to pay for a third party program (mine is pirated btw so I didn't actually pay for it lol) then I suggest patching it yourself. If you want to give it a shot (and btw it is easy, I've personally done it on a number of custom built pc's that I made for clients) check out THIS SITE (http://www.loveisme.com/showme.asp?showid=84&typeid=3).

If you don't feel comfortable doing that on your own, then you'll either have to find a free version of a third party program or pay for one. Do give the patching a try though. As I mentioned earlier its really very easy to do and is totally free. Once you patch the dll file, you can download any of the themes from any of the previously mentioned sites and skin your Win XP.

BTW I forgot about another site that has alot of stuff which is Win Customize (http://www.wincustomize.com/index.asp?u=0).
