but stupidly, high school courses for Japanese were always filled... FREAKING ANIME OBSESSED FRESHMAN ASSHOLES!!!

I'd like to learn how to speak it though, not the alphabets.

Words I already know are:

Kawaii - Cute
Inu - Dog
Neko - Cat
Hito - Person
Ryu/Tatsu - Dragon
Oni - Ogre
Sempai - Ma'am
Hai - Yes
Arigatou - Thank You
Youkai - Demon
Baka - Stupid/Idiot/Dumb
Hentai - pervert
Damare - Shut Up
Genki - energy
(and I think this is correct)Dama - Bomb?

and thats all, help please?

Oni - Ogre

To my knowledge, "Oni" is more like another word for "Demon"... Hence the "Oni" difficulty on DDR, and games like "Onimusha" that deal with demonic plotlines. This is as opposed to the huge, lumbering, and basically retarded idea we get from the word "Ogre".

Sempai is upperclassman. Used for anyone who is older than you in experience in the same ladder
IE Freshman/Sophomore/Junior
or Worker/Senior/Supervisor

And yeah, you're right Meira, Oni is more Demon. Classical Japanese Oni would be that red humanlike thing, usually with a long nose.

With horns also! Like the one Momotaro set out to hunt. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

For "Shut up" I believe the word you are looking for is "Damare"? Which is the command form of the word "Damaru".

I am not aware of what "Tatsu" has to do with Dragon?

Remember Ryutatsu (er or something like that) how he posted here how to write his manga, and then everyone berated him for having "Dragon Dragon" as a name?

All right, so far you know how to say, "Shut up, stupid preverted Demon-person" or "Thank you, Cute, superior cat."

Gaiden - Sidestory

Right?

And of course, my favorite phrase that I remember from the Japanese book I have:

"O-furo wa doko desu ka?"

(Boy, sure hope I typed that one out right.)

Isn't that really all you need to know? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

Best used by males:

'atashi wa baka na gaijin desu ne'

Best used by females:

'ore wa baka na gajin da zo'

Not quite there Ian, for males, an even better one would be

Atashi wa baka na gaijin desu wa yo ne.

The added wa at the end helps, trust me. ^_^
Ne being "Right" when the person should be agreeing anyway
Yo being "This is the truth" when telling a new fact to the other person
Putting them both together is a "You probably know this, but..." type of connotation.

Or you could just say:

Atashi wa baka na gaijin desu wa~

(if any of you have seen CardCaptor Sakura in Japanese, imagine this being said by Tomoyo for full effect). http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Particles can help in learning sentence structure, even though they are not necessarily used all the time.

Particles always (as far as I can recall) come after the word they describe, or between two related words in other terms.

'wa', written as the 'ha' character, most often marks the subject of the sentence.

As in:

watashi wa PhotonDrop desu.
I am PhotonDrop.
I (watashi) is the subject of the sentence. Hence, watashi wa.

'desu' is a copula.

cop?u?la ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kpy-l)
n.
A verb, such as a form of be or seem, that identifies the predicate of a sentence with the subject. Also called linking verb.
Logic. The word or set of words that serves as a link between the subject and predicate of a proposition.

'desu' is used at the end of a sentence or clause, and in basics can be thought of as the word 'is', in terms of usage.

In "watashi wa PhotonDrop desu", a more literal translation would be more like: I PhotonDrop is. Of course, that's more like the word for word translation, not taking into account the actual meaning.

============

'kore' refers to something near the speaker.
'sore' refers to something near the listener, or rather, the target of the speaker.
'are' refers to something away from both the speaker and the listener.

'kore wa neko desu' means: This (here) is a cat.
'sore wa neko desu' means: That (there) is a cat.
'are wa neko desu' means: That (over there) is a cat.

============

Hmm not sure what more to include... I would go to a shop that sells Japanese workbooks (the Uwajimaya's near here have a good selection). "Adventures in Japanese" is what we used in my high school classes, and it was fairly easy to use.

"Adventures in Japanese 1" hardcover: http://www.cheng-tsui.com/sb_catalog-csm.asp?grp=CS++&item=088727384X++++++++

"wa" is actually a "topic marker" whatever it follows after is the topic of the sentence, but not necessary the subject.

I'd love to raise an example, but currently I am hungry and tired. So I'll leave that to someone else.

Ah, yes. You are correct.
It had been a few years since I took classes, so I'm a bit rusty. No doubt there are plenty of other mistakes in what I just typed. :o

well i suggest always learning how to ask someone where to find a bathroom. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif it's those special emergency times that you really don't want to deal with remembering sentence structure, politeness levels, etc.

this one, though very polite, should keep you pretty safe when you're on the run, literally http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif never know if you run into someone important, no?

sumimasen ga... otearai wa dochira desu ka? (might be a bit feminine, but eh...)

you could just say,

toire... doko? (do the pee-pee dance too)

but i'd avoid using that. a bit vulgar. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Gambatte does mean dont give up. It's a popular expression among fellow ninpo practicioners.
