And as for the whole being goth for attention thing, my dad wears a lot of black and he's not goth. We both happen to like really dark colors... since childhood.

What he just did there was a typical anti-parent tantrum thrown by most goths at some point.
Either he was being ironic in a deliberate way, or just being ironic without knwoing...

I tend to dislike goths, even though I used to be one.
Main reason is that there's too many of them round here, and they're all wee kids with more money than brains, (which in some cases means about £5...).

Others, I do like. Not the ones who are all, "Oh, look at me; I'm being depressed!" or the "I told my dad to **** off yesterday, 'just **** off!' I told him... So now I'm staying at my mothers until dad forgives me, then I'll tell her to **** off!" lot.
Hell, my girlfriend's a Goth, but not a hardcore one, so I do like some, but not all. As long as they don't spout any of that Anarchist keich at me, we'll get along just fine.

Here's a story by the way, my cousin in Edinburgh and her friends keep getting followed about by these Mini-goths when at Uni, one had on a Korn hoodie, and got asked "Do you like Korn?" the rather odd reply was, "Yeah; they're my favourite clothing brand!" and he meant it...

That was kinda mean, I mean, it's like saying all hip hop people do drugs, slap hoes around, and are bitter towards cops. If we like the Crow, The One, The Matrix, or Vampire Hunter D, there's a little bit of Goth in us. If you ever thought Darth Maul was cool, you just might be a Goth. If you ever participated in Halloween or trick or treating, you just might be a Goth. If you wondered what it's like to be a Vampire and have all the cool powers, you just might be a Goth. If you play PSO and picked a black costume or a dark one, you just might be a Goth. So to my Gothie chicks: Goth Gurl, Wourm Gurl, and Psylocke, my warlock hat goes off to you!!!

g0th_gUrL

oh yay!!! Most goths i know are pretty darn happy, not to mention extremely hyper. We're not all depressed http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Oh losty, come back!! <sniffle>

Anyhow, let me tell ya'll a story. This story was told to me by a 28 year old goth who was a teen back in the 80's (lucky him).

Well, here's how it goes, he said:

"The goths of today originated back when everyone used to hang out at clubs in the 80s. People (teens) stayed up all night at clubs, then had to wake up early and go to school, college, etc. So, they started wearing black. You can't notice dark stains on black, it doesn't get dirty as easy. So now they could go clubbin' at night in their nice black clothes, wake up the next morning and go to school wearing the same thing. They painted their nails black so that you couldn't notice the dirt (eww). Their hair was was dark and messy because they hadn't washed it in days... and their skin was pale from being in a club all night, and in a school room all day."

So, goths are goths because they were dirty!! not depressed!! ha! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I must agree with GothGurl. WourmGirl is my best friend in the world and she's Goth and she is the absolute most happy-go-lucky person I know!
Now, for some, Goth is a lifestyle. And then there are people like me who like the clothes, the make-up, and some of the music. Then there are people like my friend Nicole, who dresses very preppy (she's not a prep, just dresses that way) and she's into some Goth bands. You would never suspect it!
Not all Goths are "poor me-the world sucks-I'm so depressed-fuck everyone" people. I'm sure there are just as many preps or jocks or nerds (what is up with classifications anyway? Can't a person just be themselves without being fucking labeled??) who are depressed and anarchist as there are Goths.

RuneLateralus
Jun 5, 2002, 02:07 PM
I know someone how would be the perfect example of the popular preppy girl (and yes, she was), but she loved Marilyn Manson. It is just a look, and not all a lifestyle. I like some gothic bands, but I do not wear make up and all black (I am too lazy to do all that stuff), and I mainly look like I was still in the early 90's with my jeans and various band and other type of t-shirts. You should some of the people at my college. They are not angry, depressed, or feel the world is full of suffering. They just dress the way to either stand out from the crowd or just because they like it.

Sojo

I know there are some that are ok. The sensible ones anyway.

But round here is jam-packed fething full up to the eyeballs of those who just complain about how life isn't worth living.

I've even seen one show off his self-inflicted scars to a couple of girls (who also bore similar scars) trying to look impressive...
My god, what is their drive?!

"Oh yeah, go out with me, I'm irritatingly 'depressed' and cut myself all the time for fun; I'm the life and soul of the party, me!"

They are very annoying, give the proper ones a bad name.

There's more to being Goth than just saying Marilyn Manson is god, and that at the same time you don't beleive in God...

Like every Group in the existence there will be those who makes the group look good and those that makes it look bad. Take cops for example, or "priest", and then there are Prostitutes and Porn Stars with heart of gold. It all comes back to not judging how a person looks or what group they belong to.

Basically: labels are stupid. They stifle creativity. Do what you like, and if anyone doesn't like it, screw them. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif I like wearing baubles, cheap ringer shirts, Abercrombie cargo pants, and bondage collars; what does that make me?

Everyone controls his or her own reality. I have to put up with some people with deeper depression attacks than goths around here... I just let them be, as long as they're attitude doesn't hurt me or them. And beneath a gothic face, can hide a friendly child... (and vice-versa)

It is right that there are always the bad members of a group who disgrace the rest. The actions of the few should not determine the fate of the many. In this case, the fate is being judged without knowledge.

It just so happens that the bad members of the group are the ones I usually see.
Like, I'm sure that somewhere in a secluded corner of earth there are even good Hari Krishnas and Jehovas Witnesses who hang their heads in shame at the antics of their far-flung bretheren....

That's why it's better to dissociate with them altogether.

...
Well, that may not be realistic. But I sure as hell try. Ever seen the Last Unicorn? I don't want to be a unicorn! I don't want to be human! I don't want to be immortal! I don't want to die!

Well, that doesn't really make sense in this context, but they aren't paying me to make sense.

I am half-way goth. I dont really go TOO far into it, and I dont really recognize it - i simply gravitate towards a darker dress, and I do like a lot of heavier music. Its just what i prefer. A lot of people seem to call me goth, and i guess ive got a lot of that in me http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif. I'm a PSO GOTH lol!

By the way, Cradle of Filth is a great band. So is Fear Factory. And 6 Feet Under (i'm going to see them on sunday! YEAH!). I really hate all those depresssed 'woe as me' goth fools... they are such stupid people. My mom is a god damn wierdo, but i try to live with (and love) her anyways! My dad is great though... if i didnt have him, i'd die... but anyways, its not right to hate things to be COOL, even though there is a lot of stuff i dont like (i think everybody feels that), i will never hate without full, total REASON.

uhhh im done.

just to look into this a LITTLE more - like i said, i really wouldnt call myself a GOTH.. thats a term that is being tarnished by stupid people. Another thing, i dont like the idea of bondage wear unless you plan on USING it. ANd about cutting yourself - i find sexual pleasure in being cut with my partner, but i dont go around SHOWING people my scars in public! ive only shown people patterns that ive made, and thats simply because im too stupid to get a tattoo, so i make a scar - and even then, its in private. im not trying to get people to see how HARDCORE I am. I keep these things PRIVATE. Well, not at this moment, but this is a damn message board.. i dont think anybody can see me right now http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif! What i really hate is when GOTHS or FREAKS or whatever they are, are complaining about how opressed they are by preps and jocks, but they oppress the people lower than THEM on the social chain just the same! what is wrong with so called "dorks"? many are annoying, but many are good people - i coouldnt tell you how much crap ive gotten for being friends with these TRUE misfits. Goths have become these wannabe misfits, they place themselves where they are, and secretly hope to gain popularity from it. Down with these people.

here's my take on the whole goth vs not goth thing. Being that I on many occasions put on big black boots and a Noodle boy shirt and hang out in clubs where Dark children of the Night Dance their never ending masquerade (spooky no?? I kid =D). Anyways yeah so what the goth culture is no different from the hip hop culture, the rave scene, the top 40 scene, or the 40+ rock scene.

In EVERY group of people, there are going to be assholes and exemplary people. Judging ANYONE to quickly by the way they dress or the music they listen to is placing yourself in the catagory of asshole. I mean, yeah, I listen to almost exclusively industrial/darkwave/ebm but that doesnt mean I don't listen to A LOT of J-Rock and other things. I have friends that I met in art college who have no shame that the like Aalyha(sp!?) and top 40 R&B, while musically we're worlds apart we're still friends.

Goth or not does it really matter? Especially when these people are on a forum and not interfearing with your life at all?

Okay . . . so I got a little carried away, but damn . . . so what if someone dresses different!? are you going to complain about people of different ethinicity next? it's not really that different.
"Yur funny cuz yur all different lookin!"

Anyhow, reverand, not every goth is a "whiney depressed bastard."

I don't see why the goth culture gets singled out so much. I mean, before people make any kind of judgement, they should take the time to get to know people who are actually goth. You'll be surprised as to how many stereotypes they'll prove wrong.

Why doesn't anyone ever post "damn these preppies! always so fashionable, rich, and happy!"

Blah.

Archlight0
Jun 21, 2002, 03:11 AM
Pixelate, the example while I admit is an extreme case is very similar, judging and comdemning someone for the way they look. If someone's perogative is to look a certain way and they are happy with said look may as let them be happy with it no?

Goth_Gurl, IMHO it all has to do with music, every other scene/sub-culture/what-ever has main stream support for what would be considered its musical anthems, the Goth/Rivet scene is founded and perpetuates on underground anti-mainstream music. What music companies can't sell it makes attempt to condemn, look at the Wax Trax lable, TVT crushed it when they realized it never made that much money severly damaging bands like Juno Reactor, Gravity Kills and The Thrill Kill Kult. Certain artists have milked the "Spooky Kabuki Goth" image but have always self destructed or faded into mediocrity.

HAH! I'm all passionate about this and all, but I'm not really a goth these days!
