If you feel a title is missing from this list, request it for addition.

- all games must be considered on their normal difficulty or higher
- small sections of a game cannot be isolated for the games nomination
- glitches or bugs affecting the games difficulty cannot used for nomination
- extraneous conditions for completing a game (i.e.: not dying once, using no continues, getting a score of ???) cannot be used for nomination

holy shiat, i remember TMNT was such a hard game! I don't even know how one could beat the damn thing.

Of what I've played, the 5th or so dungeon of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was inpossible to find my way around to unlock like the second half. Butr then I was only like 8-10 at the time. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

I don't think Battletoads was too hard.

And tough game, hmmm... the Gauntlet in Baulder's Gate: Dark Alliance is pretty tough.

Or Diablo 2's Hardcore mode in Hell difficulty with a computor that doesn't even meet the minimum suggested requirements and is running a poor dial-up connection. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I didnt consider any of those games particularly hard. Platformers and schmups are an excercise in meory, and remembering enemy attack patterns. If someone is going to nominate a game, remember that there are different skill levels for some games, so it may be best to just assign a value given whatever "normal" skill is. Then we of course, have games that can't be beaten, like Space Invaders, Missile Command, and the like. Are those candidates? Cause they will inevitably beat the snot out of any endable game. Too many factors for me to decide.

Breath of Fire was also an insanely hard game, because most of the time it didn't tell you what the hell you were supposed to do next.

Woah, I thought that game was the easiest I've ever played. My brother and I beat it in literally less than two days, which is saying something, because I am usually ridiculously incompetant at video games. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif Eh, I've played a lot of games that gave me trouble, but I attribute that to a severe lack of skill on my part. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Ya i agree the gauntlet was a pain but i am pleased to say that i beat the gauntlet before my 10th try, and there have been many hard games, *maybe the hardest wre the NES games? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_confused.gif *is it just me? or are game gettin easier?* but i would have to say, Castlevania 2: Simons quest was a pain to beat. and it is because of the castlevania series that more ppl commited sucide that year because they couldn't jump off the stairs is CV, *i got my info from... a friendly CV site... anyway thats all i have to say right now! later all!

There's a thin border between really hard games and poorly created games.

Bradicus
Jun 16, 2004, 09:08 PM
Though i wouldn't go so far as to call the hard games of yore "poorly created", they do seem to rely on spamming your One Hit Kill ass with as much crap as can fit on the screen (eg contra III).

The current games may seem easier because
1) Creators are making an effort to use "smart" enemies instead of the uber powerful pattern based bosses (as seen in megaman)

2) Games are more mainstream, and therefore they must cater to casual gamers/children.

3) Creators spend too much time on fancy graphics to give the game real umph.

Oh, you mean video game.

A few of hardest games I ever beat would be The Two Towers for PS2, Syphon Filter 2 for PS1, Shadow Hears for PS2, and more that I can't think of.

I didn't think The Two Towers was that hard a game, the only part that really bugged me would had to have been when the wall in Helms Deep blew up and you had to defend it *yada yada* you had to kill catapult, I didn't think the *secret lvl* was that hard, I just whooped out gimli *highest Hp for that one, next to Isulder* and plowed on through.

Xbox Ninja Gaiden, although the NES trilogy is probably equally hard. However, I never played the originals so I cannot compare.

Ninja gaiden was pretty hard... took me a week of hardcore vegetating to beat all the modes. Haven't really played the old ones yet.

However, I've been trying Super Ghouls and Ghosts for 8 years and haven't beaten it, period....

Super R-type... Raystorm (without credits)... Cybernator... All games I own that I haven't beaten. Though Raystorm I haven't had forever like the others.

As to what's the hardest game, I can't say. I haven't played enough to even think about generalizing. And even if I could, it'd just be the hardest game for me personally. (though I suppose that goes without saying...)

I'm surprised that hardly anyone has said the Contra series. Those games, especially the NES ones, can get difficult.

I also heard that Metroid (on NES) is hard now. Of course, it probably just did not age well.

Metroid for the NES is not hard at all i got more challange for Fusion then NES, especially wen trying to get 100% and beat game in under 2 hours for fusion....that was HARD, i tried tons of times before i finally did, ya and Gran Turismo is hard and frustating, i agree with that

You want hard? Or damned near impossible? Get ahold of a copy of Might and Magic 6 for the PC, an old game, then try going through Castle Darkmoor in less than a weeks real time. >_< *STILL needs therapy because of that place*

"Ninja Gaiden" {Xbox} *on hard/very hard difficulty* was one of the most challenging games I've ever played *still playing infact*.......but, "Super Mario Bros" {NES} was aslo a very difficult game..... http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I don't know......that's a really hard choice to make?! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_confused.gif

Can you put "Super Mario Bros" & "Ninja Gaiden" into the poll?!

If you're talking about "The Gaunlet" you unlock when you beat the game........

I actually thought it was impossible.....at first. There's a trick to beating it, though *and it's not those stupid cheats, either*. You have to lure your enemies into a one-on-one/very small group fight *though it's hard to do this with the spiders*.

I also found this strategy quite helpful {use your spells *a lot* Dritz can recharge his magic}, wait till a group of people are gathered and freeze them with the "ice sphere" attack.......run up to them and slash their corpses into ice crystals. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

You might have to do this over and over again, but in the end you will succeed, and unlock Dritz in story mode. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

Playing with Dritz throughout the adventure is very entertaining........ http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_yes.gif

Ehm, I can't remember the proper name, but the F-Zero from gamecube. (My brother bought it, it was his cube http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif)No, I'm not talking about the stupid story mode, that's simple, I mean, beating ALL the staff ghosts. I've been gaming since I was, like, 3, and I still can't get over how difficult that game is, even with my experience - It requires so much concentration, it's untrue...http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I loved TMNT, I remember finishing it as a child, an amazing game, but is nowhere near deserving for title of 'Hardest game ever'

Skett
Jun 17, 2004, 10:30 AM
Yes, F-Zero GX is a difficult game. Than again, the ones before it were challanging also, so Sega just upheld the tradition.

I don't think that Super Mario Brothers is a hard game. I was playing it on my GBA and it did not seem to difficult. All you need is good reflexes and to look before you jump. Now the Legend of Zelda is hard.

I can't think of any games that I consider 'hard', but the hardest BOSS(ES) I'd say would have to be the last two bosses - Jurgen Wolfe and Balor (that god dude) - in BloodRayne. Jesus that was annoying as crap...

I figured out a funny little thing to waste Jurgen straight off, but Balor is just a complete pain... gotta hit this damn heart in the middle of his ribcage while he continuously grows larger! When he gets too large a cinema plays showing Balor instant kill you and Jurgen... >_<

I killed Balor with the LAST shot from the last gun available to me and seeing as melee attacks were useless when he's taller than a skyscraper, I was happy!

>_O VECTORMAN. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

I'm suprised at the fact that nobody has mentioned any of the Ecco: The Dolphin series games yet? Now, THOSE games were freaking near impossible, even with save-state emulation. Some other (Really freaking hard!)impossible games:

Shinobi (PS2)
Most of the Contra series (For some reason 1&2 didn't present much of a challenge, but everything after...GAH!)
Gladius
Any "R-Type" game
Pacman, and any games similar to it

I still nominate Ecco: The Dolphin as the hardest game ever.

I found Wind Waker more challenging then Oot AND master quest, adn wind waker was pretty easy so thats saying something, tho zelda is probably just easier for me since i grew up with all the originals. and i beat every zelda game once a year just to refresh my memory and get my sef ready for the next one http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Heres a challange for you, try to beat every zelda without dying OR using a fairy so your play count is 0

*note* on the NES it is only this is ALMOST impossible do to the fact that saving *even if you dont die* still counts as a death and is added to your play count. good luck. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER GAIARES ON THE GENESIS/MEGA DRIVE? With the starfighter along with the TOZ system by your side for absorbing the enemy's weapon and using it against them? It was an arcade type game, side scrolling, shooting. What most people might remember is: One hit from ANYTHING destroyed you instantly! There were sheilds in some rare places, but not at all often.

If you do remember, you know how hard that was!!! I could only get up to like level 3. I used cheats to get to the later levels to see what it was like, and I was like, "How the hell do you do this!" It was impossible. Literally! I could not see how you could do it, the bosses would just own you in like 2 seconds flat!

Zelda OoT was an excellent game. But definately NOT hard. I found it pretty easy, oh, hang on, I looked at gamefaqs.com a few times, meh. I found it generally easy. Any puzzle I got stuck on for about an hour or 2, I took a peak at the faq, but most, near to all, I did it myself!

Only Ikaruga and Battletoads are the only games I haven't beaten. Thank to the scroll trick (grab it, fall into the water, repeat), I managed to beat TMNT.

I would agree on Ecco. The only hard Contra was Shattered Soldier. Also all the Ninja Gaiden games are quite hard, though I'd say the Xbox one takes the cake for the series. When it comes to well done and difficult "space shooters" there are a ton: R-Type(series), Ikaruga, Radient Silvergun, Einhander, ect...

Batman and Robin for the Genesis. I don't know how many times I have to say it. Hardest. Game. Ever.

Panzer Dragoon Orta is pretty hard if you've got the difficulty on anything higher than easy. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_yes.gif

I had loads of trouble with the fifth stage boss.

He shoots out rockets 24-7, and goo things when under his wings, and when you're in front of him he rams you. Also *when he is at 25% health and lower* he breaks his shell into thousands of pieces *dodging and shooting these shards is very tricky*. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

It is a really challenging and fun game though. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smilejap.gif

hmmm... the Gauntlet in Baulder's Gate: Dark Alliance is pretty tough.

That game was sooooo easy, me and my bro beat it in like two days. Even those were days where we stayed up until 1:00 am playing. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

if im not mistaken you hae already told us that ealier in this thread. and yes the game was easy, but were not talking bout the game game, we are talking about the "GAUNTLET" unlockable feature you get after you beat the game, where you play as Dritz. the dark elf dude. that WAS hard, took me less than 10 tries to beat...unlike a few friends of mine i know....hahahaha. *eats more m&m's*

Ive said this before and ill say it again, which ninja gaiden are you talking about? the Xbox one was far easier than NG2 and NG3 for NES especilay NG3 where you die in less than 5 hits. hmmm thats hard. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Xbox, I found it hard, and it is quite easy to die, but hey, I don't personally own it, I've only played it at my friend's house.

Games that I've played (and remembered) that haven't been mentioned yet but don't count as being COMPLETELY hard:

Hunter: The Reckoning -> Anyone manage to beat that last level, esp, playing with friends who have a bad habit of dying?

Morrowind -> I just got frustrated and lost

Warcraft II (PC)-> Last couple of missions were killers

Strife (for PC) -> Ugh.

Duke Nukem 3D (PC) -> Hard only due to the "WTF is going on!?" factor

Ghost Recon -> "Hey, all my squad mates are dead! #*&$*#!"
