Ultima Online, Anarchy Online, Planetside, Horizons, FFXI, City of Heroes, Asheron's Call, Asheron's Call 2, EVE, Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies, Lineage II, Mimesis Online, Neocron, Project Entropia, Shadowbane...blah blah blah. Heh.

Ultima Online is great fun, has all kinds of stuff to do. Planetside is ok but it's nothing but war and capturing bases. Horizons has over ten playable races, and a ton of classes, two races were freed by the players in events over the last four months or so. Has crafting as well as adventuring.

Final Fantasy XI is the only MMORPG that doesn't suck. Get it.

City of Heroes for now.
Worlds of Warcraft for later.

Get the PC version. That's what I'm doing.

thats in your opinion, kent. which obviously doesent matter a whole lot now does it?

i would say city of heros or dark age of camelot. final fantasy is a waste of time IMO.

(funny though, almost every single MMORPG is a clone of another one, so you're getting the same thing no matter what you get)

Priston Tale (http://eng.pristontale.com/) is totally free, but a rather hefty download. I just picked it up again for the first time in quite a while the past weekend. I won't say that it's not without flaws. It could've used a bit more thought in balancing the character development, but it offers a decent challenge to overcome. Still, for something that's entirely free, it's quite solid.

Priston Tale

my god, that game is more mind-numbing then PSO...

I dunno, I just wanted something to explore and Priston Tale was free. It's kinda nice though... With every level, I'm finding that I can wander about a bit more.

.Hack//Sign inspired me...

FFXI--really good MMORPG, but beware of the cost to play! ($12.95/mo)

I'm entering the MMORPG world with World of Warcraft. I would recommend it, but I doubt that it'll fit your timeframe.

So what? SWG costs 15 a pop to play.

Planetside is a great idea. Even though all it is is capturing bases. You can do a lot of cool stuff, and can trade in certifications to try out other skills (certs are your skills. Each one costs a certain cert point, and you can trade them back to get an equal number of cert points to try something else. But you have to wait 24 hours before you can get the cert you turned in again). This allows you to go from heavy artillery, to stealthy infiltrator, to air support, all based on your style. I really need to get that game again.

It matters just as much as yours.

Yeah, The Matrix Online (http://www.thematrixonline.com) looks to be good, the video shown at E3 was interesting, heh.

I say go with FFXI or City of Heroes. If not for the monthly fee on CoH, I would buy it myself. Also, a game called Guild Wars is coming out and you don't need to pay any monthly fee.

If you have the time and patience for it, try FFXI. It was fun for me when I was around my friends' levels (though I did not have much time to play it do to time constraints of real life).

If you do not have the full time for it, then City of Heroes. Sure, it is not as depthful as the other MMORPGs out there, but it wasn't meant to be...it was meant to be more fun.

And that is what it is...fun.

Plus, it has the best character creation screen of all games. There is a damn good chance that there will be no two characters that look the same.

It does have a few glaring flaws, but if you're up for a challenge and just want a solid, free MMORPG, Priston Tale (http://www.pristontale.com) is probably the best you can get.

Thinking about it, there's also Well of Souls (http://www.synthetic-reality.com/wosHome.htm), which has a few advantages and a few disadvantages to Priston Tale. On the one hand, Well of Souls is extremely customizable (heck, if you're bored enough, you can create your own world), and has an interesting approach to handling hackers (cheats are allowed, but result in a number of disadvantages), but lacks a 3D environment. Priston Tale is probably the more interesting of the two, albeit, Well of Souls is definitely worth a look.

spiffiness, ill check out both.

I know I've already talked you into trying it, but I honestly don't think I've given Priston Tale enough credit, and it's kinda bugging me.

The game is hard, but it's strangely rewarding once you've progressed to the point where enemies that were giving you trouble are now falling at your feet. Especially once you've gotten to the point where you can start to freely explore your surroundings. There's a vivid world there with a number of interesting nooks and crannies to identify. Some will probably get bored after just leveling for a while, but quite honestly, there's quite a bit to explore, and quite a few of the monsters were designed rather creatively.

ok, thats spiffy,

dot dot dot

though i dont think you gave it enough credit http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif a little more just might convert me entirely
