I was just wondering if all the different variations and patterns of the different maps have an equal appearance rate. I'm going to start searching for a spread needle with my purplenum foney shortly and was trying to decide what the best way to go about doing that was. I was thinking of just doing ruins 1&2 over and over, since ruins 2 seems like it has the most merlans. Any advice would be welcome.

Im not sure how they are divided, but map variations depend on whether you have an A or B type section ID.

http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif oh yeah....Ruins 2 has by far the most merlans, so yes, your plan is good.

Lain pretty much summed it up, but if you meant between the 2~3 usual variations, yes. Its pretty much random. Playing over and over the Ruins 1, 2, and 3, I've found it fairly random.

As for Merlans, I'm not the purplenum expert (perhaps you want to ask Ian-Kun X about this), but statistically I think that's a good choice. Run over ruins a couple times, and from my friend's experience, that's probably a way to go.

R1 Enemy Counts (http://www.pso-world.com/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=760)
R2 Enemy Counts (http://www.pso-world.com/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=761)

R3 Enemy Counts (http://www.pso-world.com/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=762)

Those should help.

Does anyone else know anything about this??

Oh, and BladeOfDarkness, I've already looked at those extensively. I even figured out the average number of merlans in each area of the ruins. But I might have to refigure if what lain2k3 said is true.

I didn't know. But lain's information is pretty accurate, so I wouldn't be suprised.

I'm a little curious about what lain said too.

A or B type? There are more than 2 layouts in some areas...

And which ID's are which?

And if it has anything to do with section ID, why can i get all the different layouts wih the same chracter?

Variations are different things than layouts actually.

As everyone said, Ruins 2 has the most Merlans. I have a Purplenum RAmar. I hunted the Spread extensively for a while. I did at least 25-30 Ruins runs (most I skipped Falz). I got unlucky, as I went way over the drop rate, but that can be expected because the game is so random. I'd say that you should only do Ruins 1 & 2, like you planned on doing. Ruins 3 doesn't have that many and can be a pain at times. Good luck hunting your Spread http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I'm probably missing something obvious, but would you care to explain that?

I think this is what she (butoden, your a gal right?) means:

layout: the physical set up of the area (its called "pattern" in the maps section of the guides
variation: how the start, finish, traps, switches, and enemies are set up in a certain layout

As far as I can tell, there are 3 different patterns for each area, and each pattern has 2 different variations. It would be nice to know which section i.d.s get which patterns or variations and how that works exactly.
