does the Xbox need to be connected to the computer?

if it does, can you use a wireless router?

The XBox only has to be hooked up to a router (which should be attached to the modem) either through wires or wireless. Or you can do ICS (internet connection sharing), but that's if you don't have a router.

You don't need to connect to a computer at all.
You can run a straight cable-modem-XBOX connection.
