So many other people were making a big deal about what the best FPS was and things, so I thought I would make this it's own topic.-_- Use it or not. I decided not to do a poll, because then people would yell that I forgot this game, and that this one doesn't deserve to be in it, etc etc. Anyway, for my vote, the best FPS would definitely have to be as a Mercenary in Pandora Tomorrow. I love this for it's originality that instead of two teams blasting the shit out of each other, it's a game of stealth, shooting, and strategy, a perfect combination.

A downside about the game is since both teams aren't the same, there are a lot of levels that are very disadvantaged for one team. Also, I don't like the fact that in an Xbox Live game, you can change the map/ranking mode right before you start the game if your the host...I'll always join a non-ranking to play for a little bit of fun and see if I can win giving myself certain conditions, like just breaking all the enemies necks, or not using Mines/SpyTraps, and go screwin around, then afterwards find out I lost points because he made it ranking at the last second...

....anyways, yes, please discuss views on the best First-Person Shooter title to date.

I like Halo, which is obvious from the "Overrated" thread. Yes, it was overrated, it wasn't perfect, but I still think it's the best CONSOLE FPS. Goldeneye and R6 3 some in a close tie for 2nd.
Now, for PC I'd choose CoD (Call of Duty) which is an AWESOME game.

EDIT: Oops I put PS instead of PC.

best console fps yes.

However, best fps ever? ever ever? i'm afraid im gonna go with the masses and just say half-life. honestly, since then, few games have ever mirrored the fun i had playing that. it had a shite b-movie story, but the way it was told was amazing! The level design was great, the guns all had their uses, enemies were excellent. and the [i]feel[i/] the game had, just how scared shitless you where the first time you heard the thumping of the tenticale against that hard metal wall, before you even seen it. And although i depise counter-strike, you have to respect something that started off as a mod and conquered the online gaming scene. I can't wait for the second one. I get butterflies playng it.

a close second for me would be unreal tournament/ ut2003/04. Pure and utter fun! the weapons selection and level selection was much better than quake 3's (granted it had great deathmatch, but overall i enjoyed unreal more). and again it had that feel to it. the cheesy death sport dealy. My favourite gun ever - the flak cannon and best sniper rifle (in the first game, that lighting gun and re-make in the 03/04 editions sucked). Love unreal tourny! And generally the people playing unreal are quite friendly. well compared to the hard-core counter-strike community. in my humble opinion best multiplayer fps.

so to sum up - half-life (and the of expansion) best single player, unreal tourney - multiplayer.

keep on shootin!

PEACE!!!

I agree with BOC in that Half-life is probably the best shooter. My first encounter with the military as he shot the poor scientist that ran to him... http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif and seeing the Gargan (huge blue single red eye monster) for the first time... http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif

Half-life is a milestone much like Wolfenstien and DOOM back in the day.

... and I loathe CS and what it has become.

PC: Probably Half-Life and more importantly the mods with it.

Console: I would say its a tie between Perfect Dark, Halo, and Goldeneye 007.

when i first saw that part, i through myself of the stairway and blew the trooper away in a flurry of shotgun blasts cause it annoyed me to see an unarmed man gunned down.

and the garge part was cool when he chases you outa the car park after smashing that car against the two soldiers, frickin fear inspiring.

and what about the first time you get your grubby HEV clad hands on a snark? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_evil.gif fun for all the demonic family!

for a 5 year old game it can still hold its own against whats on offer today. fair enough, some games have better ai, some have better stories, others better levels, MOST better graphics, better weapons - but none of them have really done it ALL as well as half-life.

Hmm, i really would be able to choose one game as the best FPS ever. FPS' seem to be evolving and changing in their own little way. The SP FPS and MP FPS seems to show and genre getting its own sub genre. But some of the best i would say;

Deus Ex: Fantastic story and atmosphere. It was great how you could effect the story in so many ways and could play the game you wanted. You could be all gung ho and kill everything in a flurry of bullets, be a stealthy pacifist and sneak by everyone or be a Techy and sneak about killing people with the machinery that was laying about the levels. Me? I played somewhere in the middle ground of Gung Ho and Techy.

Half Life: It changed the FPS world. Again the atmosphere was great, some brilliant map designs and some very satisfying weapons. And again you were given choices: did you kill those scientists who were hiding in Black Mesa? Barneys could become nice ammo dispensers at times with just a quick whack to the back of the head with a crowbar. First time through the game i didnt really care, but when i played through it again i tried so hard not to let any scientists or Barneys die at all. Was also supported by a great mod scene (i loved 'Azure Sheep' for some reason)

Quake 2: The first Quake was a laugh, but the story at some of the graphics (brown) were a let down. Quake 2 did Quake but 10 times better. The Stroggs were a ferocious enemy who you knew you had to beat. You would some times get pangs of sympathy at times, but only for the poor grunts who were being experimented on by the Stroggs (the first prison area was quite a shock, with all those grunts screaming to be put out of their misery. Then there was the interogation and torture area later that made you want to put lead to Strogg skull). There was also some great secrets (find the one in the final level, very funny) to be found.

And also a surprisingly good console version for the PSOne. Someone should have added some of the extra maps from that version to the PC original.

Jedi Knight 2: Lightsabers. Nuff said.

Well, not enough really. Great online mode aswell that is still going strong with its own Codes and Rules. Dare not forget to bow before a duel starts!

Since everyone else is doing it, I'll put what I think is the number 1 Single Player FPS - Hitman: Contracts. I haven't played any other Hitman games, but damn, I loved this game! I don't know if it counts as an FPS, since you can switch between First and Third person, but it's a great assassination game. Agent 47 is one of the most motherfucking badass people I've ever met....though the story is confusing if you haven't played the other games/don't have a friend to tell you what's going on.

Some of it can get pretty weird and nasty though, like in the Meatpacking plant level with the Meat King, you find that girl all hung up and in peices like that....and you take her arm....ewww...and the Hotel level, where the rooms get all dark when you go into the certain section where somebody's committed suicide. That ghost roaming the hall's creeped me out, for some reason. This game is pretty fun, but if you're just looking to beat it very fast than it's boring. Easy to go through and shoot everybody and walk away, but getting Silent Assassin on every mission is hard! The game has a lot of cool guns, too, but I thought they had too many Dual Pistols. I got sick of seeing my hard work rewarded by the same exact thing I got last game but with different Ammo Capacity/Power/Looks. Stuff like the Dual Micro Uzis made it worth it, though!

If you haven't played this game or one of it's prequels before(Hell, even if you have played a prequel), I strongly recommend at least renting this excellent game.

Without making any pretense, or going on about my reasons, i'll say Metroid Prime.

Come down on me if you will, but i enjoyed it more than any other FPS i've played. Until i popped it into my cube, I didn't even know that exploration was my thing.

For a more traditional answer, i'll go with timesplitters 2.

i went all out gung-ho blowing shite to pieces!!! unless i thought that they werent deserving of death and simply knocked em out. but i didn't do it stealthily. just aint my bag baby http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif i wanted to say deus ex as a close second, but i, in my own mind, would consider to be more of an rpg. still a cracker fps, better than many straight up shooters. and if a merc in pandora tomorrow can feature, yeah it gets a close second.

(i loved 'Azure Sheep' for some reason) i played that one. loved it to pieces!! my memory is a little fuzzy, but it did feature a mini-gun and a aliens style pulse rifle didn't it? half-life has THE best mods out there, for single player at least. but my all time favourite was they hunger series. a total departure from the whole aliens and government cover up plot. and im always a sucker for zombie movies. which it really did feel like

quake one could be fun at times, but in my eyes, for first person shooters it was one step forward, but two steps back. yeah graphics where amazing for the time (Wow! real 3d!) but the levels, monsters, guns and general appeal was just not comparable with duke 3d. and i doubt ive ever seen so much brown. quake 2 was the superior of the two, better levels, weapons, story and monsters. the strogg are just some of the most badass enemies ever concieved! and it was the first fps where you could travel between levels at ur own whim! And the guns where sooooo cool! loved that super shotgun! and that machine gun! and the rail gun. mmmmm. Thats what really disappointed me about quake 3. Instead of the weapons been ugly lumps of evil death dealing metal like in quake 2, they became fisher-price style kiddies toys. i mean, the q2 railgun was *VAA-WHOOSSH!!!* with that cool corkscrew effect http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif!! the q3 railgun was a *pfft* with a shitty solid line after it. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_nono.gif

Jedi Knight 2: Lightsabers. Nuff said.
i love jedi knight 2. bloody amazing game! but i myself wouldn't really consider it a fps. lets face it, the strength of the game lied in the light-saber and force powers, and u spent most of the time in third person using those. the shooting parts were very weak. but still a cracker game! and the multi-player was excellent. it was said it was the honorable players choice. with the bows, and the polite chatter between saber strikes. and nobody would strike you down if u didn't have ur saber activated. unless they were bastards. im getting the urge to go play it now....

Lovely thought for the end of the night there Boc http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

isn't it just? all i need is a female jc denton (i would say alex D, but lets face it the first game was better http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif) and i could have myself a threesome! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

i hate the whole round thing altogether. but i hate cs most for really starting it. i avoid all those round based games. good old unreal 2004 never fails me in that area *pats game*

and everybody hates those jackassess who join ur team and shoot their teammates. cry for attention is what it is.

A man! I so forgot about 'They hunger'. One of the best mods ive ever played. The opening was well paced and i almost sh*t myself when that first zombie attacked. A group of my mats were watching me play it and laughed so hard when i managed to miss with nearly every one of my shots while panicing.

Cant be bothered ot reqoute again, but i think maybe i should agree with you on JK2 not being truely classed as a FPS. Trying to use the lightsaber in FP mode was almost sickening and thirdperson was the real way to go to get the most from the experiance.

And Quake 2 had some fantastic weapons, and a gib with the Super-Shotgun was so satisfying. Actually, talking about it now really makes me want to load i up again. Ooh ooh, and the Tank was a brilliant enemy in the game. I saw the figure of it a couple of years back and so wanted it for my shelf, then some git bought it before i came back with the cash. Oh well, Solid Snake and Temjin are happily occupying that spot now.

I would also like to get a mention in for System Shock 2 here. If you played and liked Deus Ex, you will love this game. It has a really creepy feeling to it, and the ghosts that turn up can be quite disturbing. Im so badly trying to find a legit copy of this game as the version i had got scratched to death while packing for University, stupid broken CD case.

Probably Battlefield 1942. I just enjoy going online, taking a plane, flying it into the water, jumping onto the enemies ship, doing massive damage, leaping into a sub, all before being shot by a sniper.

Chronicles of Riddick overhyped? I never even heard of the game until it was released. And I watch G4TechTV a lot and I saw a making of Riddick once. Perhaps you exagerating. Oh, the game looks great, I might add. Some of the best graphics on Xbox, hands down.

in no way is halo the worst fps ever! not the best, but certainly not the worst. a zillion times better than painkiller. and at least u redeemed urself by saying CnC and dikatana are.

but u think the original unreal is the best fps EVER?!?! normally i try to respect others views, but in this case, you are dead wrong. for the time the graphics were amazing, but come on! the levels where poorly designed, the weapons we soooo bad, the monsters, while intelligent, were so unimaginative. though the skaarj were well concieved. probably the reason why they are the only enemy that made the leap to unreal 2. but other than the skaarj, the enemies were a chore to fight. which was made worse by the shite weapons. in fact, if it was a chore, it would be mowing the lawn. with a pair of toy scissors. Another thing is that upon release the network code for unreal 1 was so poor. had to wait for upgrades, and by the time they rolled around, people just weren't interested anymore. for multi-player tournament just kicked so much more ass. unreal 1 alongside black&white are the only games i couldn't play through to completion. got about 1/2 way and just thought whats the point.

one thing i will say about unreal is that it was an important game for first person shooters. in graphics and ai it pushed the boundries further for others. the engine was amazing, giving us games like unreal tourny, deus ex and so on. still the original unreal was a disappointment.

but if u enjoy playing it, even on ur beast of a pc (though you should be using it to play excellent shooters like far cry, deus ex 2 and unreal 2004 - and hl2 and doom 3 when they see release), so be it. happy gaming dude http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif. and while prefering a retro game, least you didn't claim doom 1 to be the best fps ever (yes, it was brill at the time, without it there would probably not be so many good shooters, but gentlemen it is no longer the best. it was only the best because it and wolf3d were the only shooters!!! - for the doomites.)

damn i like to rant.

Halo is in no way the best FPS ever. Not on consoles, not on PC, not at all.

PC- Half-Life.

Console- Goldeneye/Perfect Dark. Been playing both since they came out and haven't let up yet. Meanwhile, I stopped playing Halo after I beat it once. Nothing special.

If you want a truely tense FPS, try Rainbow Six 3 and 'The Specialists'. The Specialists is a mod for Half-Life (steam only now) that adds realistic weapon models, kickback, realistic reload times, and Matrix-y dodge moves and even 'bullet-time'. 1000% better than 'Enter the Matrix'.

Halo for the Xbox is undoubtedly the best FPS ever created in gaming's history. A true piece of genius. However, when Halo 2 arrives, that will probably take Halo's place as my favorite FPS.
