red slime piping?

How does it work? i split the slimes to make 4 (is there somewhere to make 8?) i pipe up then back down, their gone....does the spliting have a chance of a red slime? I should know this really, but ive been away from ep 1 and 2 for months.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
