View Full Version : What makes you think people online are girls?

Sharkyland
Jul 19, 2004, 12:18 AM
It seems whenever I go to a chatroom or play a video game online, people seriously think I'm a girl when I'm clearly a male... why am I asking this? There was this guy in the room in PSO and there were two HUnewearls, one of them being me and the other one seemingly said she was a lesbian. One guys said, which one of these two is female, of course, I got picked as the female.

Surely, I'm...
- friendly & polite to people (when I'm not in a pissy mood)
- I seem to control my cuss rate, and I do try to censor sometimes
- I don't speak much and usually keep personal comments to myself (more like opinions like 'your idea sucks', but not to that degree)
- my avatar or character is always a female character because it's nice to stare at something where you are bored and it's a bit pleasant...

So... I'm wondering what makes you think someone online is a girl? Really a weird topic, but I'm curious what people think.

Wrong forum, better in Off-topic.

I don't know myself. My main character on Horizons is a dragon, and a lot of people think I'm a female. Doesn't bother me, I guess it's just my personality that portrays me as such.

0.o Oh man, this can get seriously nasty. Trust me Sharky, this gets worse in the Japanese blocks. Yestarday I was playing on BB, and their manners are spanking clean! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif So I have no choice but to use formal speech back to them- and what do you know? They think I'm a girl, not just because I'm a FOnewearl- but they were girls. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif Should've realized

Honestly though, if they think you're a girl, just tell em. If that doesn't work, go up to them and start slapping them in the face... I think it was alt+Y http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif.

For Xbox ver: Voice masking, high picted screaming, and 10 year olds who think their "all that" because they have a J-Sword but know nothing about the game, story line, or how to stay alive.

I assume everyone is male until proven otherwise unless they act really girly, at which point my gaydar goes off and I assume they're either flamingly homosexual or attempting to be. That or stupid.

Assuming you can tell just from the way someone types which gender they are is a wonderful example of stereotyping. Which needs to die. :3

I've never been called a female, but I have been called:

-British
-Canadian
-Motherfucker
-Fanboy
-and many other colorful metaphors.

It's hard to say what makes people so sure that it's a female that they are playing with.

I just assume everyone I meet on PSO is a guy until they specifically say otherwise.

And I'm mistaken for a girl every once in a while, but since most of the people on the blocks I go to already know me, it doesn't happen as much anymore.

I honestly don't know. Its usually a gut instinct with me, until they tell me if they are a man or woman. But I usually seem to feel most people I interact with online are men. Except for here. I don't know if there are a lot of women here, or just alot of guys who make me think they are ladies. Not that that is a bad thing!

I don't know...

I'm going to shut up before I dig myself deeper. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I conducted an experiment with a pink haired HUmar to see if anyone noticed. I think a girl did...

The communicator seems to pull voices into the "girl" or "guy" spectrums though. Stupid digitalization.

Actually, I thought that too. But over the past two weeks I've met 6 different female PSO'ers (and its pretty easy to tell the difference between actual girls and voice masking).

I am usually tipped off by breasts. If they have these, first thing I check for is definition and hair. If they are really hairy on the chest, I assume they are men with bitchtits.

Subliminalgroove, I'm surprised you aren't hit on all the time on these forums. Especially after seeing your picture in the RL thread. Smart, well-learned(yes there is a difference for those who don't know), and hot to def.

Usually, it's intuition, not logic, that tells me whether someone is male or female over the internet (lucky me, it hasn't been wrong yet)... Either that or someone flat-out stating their sex.

The title of this is "What makes you think people online are girls?". I answered this question with a precise answer. The type of answer you are looking for can easily be found, if you read into it. Some may have taken my statement and assume that I don't believe people are any gender on the internet until I see true photographic proof. Anyone who assumed so is correct. I don't believe anything without having some proof. Of course just because a person shows you a picture, it doesn't mean it is them. This is proven by my posting on the RL Pic thread. I don't really have a little green plastic body. It's really a peach plastic body.

ee; I guess that makes sense?

Anyway in serious-ness i am accused of being female alot. For Such reasons...

1. 90% of my Online Chars are Female. Which is for the fact they're usually more difficult or more varietious than Male Chars.

2. My Abuse of the Color Purple

3. The shrouded Cute-ness i pull off With pictures, Icons, Avi's etc.

4. The way i type occassionally makes me seem lady like as well. Like typing polite and not bein all short type.

Meh, i don't let all the constant asking of my masculinity bother me any longer. They can think what they want, i am not going to change how i act.

I just assume everyone on PSO is a guy until they claim otherwise, past that I don't care.

On PSOW I'll just take a look at a person's profile and if the gender isn't listed there then I'll just call them by whatever gender their avatar, name, and title seem to point too.

But then again, there are some big fat 40-year-old greasy men here that are playing us all for fools. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

It is safe to assume that 99% of people whom use the internet are male. So what about the other 1%? I really don't know... I think 0.999% go to people in fursuits, which would make them sub-animal... *shudder* So the leftover 0.001% are female.

Am I forgetting the stupid 12-year-old girls who can't type? They don't "use" the internet... they mutilate it, so they don't count. Yeah, up yours, xXxXx_-SeXy_PrInCeSs_BaBy_StAr_839726_-xXxXx

It is the exact reverse when regarding Japanese players on PSO. it's 99% female there, and 1% male.

I may guess that an online personality is female if they utilise the word "cute". Still, i couln't care less.

If you are male, here's a neat little experiment: Use the word "cute" around your male friends. Uncomfortable silence, here you come!

I havent posted here on psow in ages, but i was poking around and I just had to reply to this topic.

I met this fonewearl on pso about 2 weeks ago. I thought they were female because the acted really..and i mean really girly. Giggles and all. I was surprised to find out it was a guy.

He and another friend of mine, who also happens to be a guy suddenly get lovey dovey. And now im at a loss for words. I'm sure the first guy i spoke of, the fonewearl isnt gay, or at least thats what he told me. Why he felt the need to emphasize it is beyond me.

They call eachother sweetie and love and cuddle in the lobbies...its all very confusing really.

After this i've pretty much given up being sure of anyones gender on pso. Really it doesnt matter, long as they can play. I call them he, or she, based on their character regardless. Sooo much easier. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_bunny.gif

Well. If I play an online game and I can be something that isn't male or female then I will be that. But if people call me a guy then I am a guy and if people call me a girl- I am a girl. But it's fun to play around with them so that they get annoyed.

By the way. On PSOW I am both female and male.

How to tell if someone is a female:
1) cat symbol chats
2) they say cute
3) their characters aren't scantily clad
4) their characters have normal proportions

How to tell if someone is a male:
1) midget FOnewearl
2) midget HUnewearl
3) scantily clad versions HUneys and FOneys
4) RAmar
5) HUcast
6) random and frequent use of swear words

There you have it, a sure-fire way to tell what gender people are.

The Correct answer is absolutely nothing..

I dont see the need for me or anyone else here to try and start relationships online.

Unless of course the person was from your area..

Other than that exception, I would find it useless to try and do so... Find some friends go out, do something..

Being online is a good experience, But you gotta get out and see people too..

Dont live your life through a pixelated screen..

Not trying to be rude.. spoken through experience..
